About the Role:

The SPD Courier driver will drive the truck to transport surgical instrumentation to various campus locations. The instrumentation courier is primarily responsible for the safe and timely transportation of medical instruments between campuses, ensuring proper handling, documentation, and adherence to strict regulations, including picking up instruments from designated locations, delivering them to the correct recipient, maintaining chain of custody, and following all necessary safety protocols while in transit. His/her duties will include loading and unloading the truck, placing transported sterile items on designated shelves, handling soiled instrumentation, maintaining accurate logs, and daily cleaning tasks of truck. In addition, the SPD courier will work as an SPD tech during down time and/or department needs. The SPD Courier works under the supervision of the ORC Manager. Must collaborate with others, including Operating Room, Sterile Processing, Anesthesia support, and Distribution. The Individual must demonstrate our core values, core competencies, professionalism, and ethical standards. The SPD courier must possess a high degree of accountability. The Individual must complete assigned tasks timely and adhere to the established schedule. The individual must demonstrate an understanding of their role and its impact on quality patient care and throughput. The SPD courier will maintain a safe environment for fellow team members and patients.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or other certifications: Valid Georgia Driver's License with no pattern of driving violations/accidents in either a personal or commercial vehicle.

  • Preferred Licensure or other certifications: SPD certification within 12 months of hire.

Job Specific and Unique Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Precise Hand Eye Coordination

  • Manual Dexterity Skills

  • Has appropriate knowledge of instruments and their assembly (laparoscopy)

  • Knows priority instruments and equipment and processes these accordingly

  • Knowledge of proper inspection of filter, seals, and placement of container

  • Understands the principles of sterilization and the importance of the sterilization process by demonstrating the correct procedure to load and operate all sterilizers, to ensure product sterility

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Collect surgical and medical instrumentation for various campuses according to a scheduled route, verifying the accuracy of the instrumentation and ensuring they are properly packaged for transport.

  • Maintain accurate documentation throughout the delivery process, including tracking details if applicable, pick up time, and recipients signature to ensure proper chain of custody.

  • Take cart(s) to designated areas. Remove sterile trays from carts and place trays on their designated shelf for onsite storage

  • Verify the quantity and condition of instruments before and after delivery, reporting any discrepancies to the appropriate personnel. Locate carts with soiled instrumentation trays from the designated pick-up area. Load dirty trays on the truck.

  • Communicate effectively with campuses regarding pick-up and delivery schedules, addressing any concerns or questions promptly.

  • Carefully handle delicate surgical instrumentation to prevent damage during transport, following specific guidelines for all instrumentation.

  • Responsible for all pre-trip safety inspections, preventative truck maintenance services, and all other regulations per the Department of Transportation (DOT). Must adhere to Company DOT Program policies and procedures when applicable.

  • Optimize delivery routes to ensure timely delivery, taking into account traffic conditions and potential delays. Regularly inspect the delivery vehicle to ensure it is in proper working order and meets safety standards.

  • Provide and receives accurate feedback in a professional manner.

  • Adherence to standard precautions regarding the transport of surgical instrumentation, including proper labeling, temperature control, and biohazard safety procedures. Courier will be responsible for cleaning the truck on a scheduled timeline.
