The Counselor is a generalist that supports the mental health of students through individual and group counseling, outreach/programming, and consultation. The Counselor will seek to intervene and assist with personal student growth or emotional remediation. This position will oversee practicum student development, outreach programming such as campus resilience, fulfill case management tasks as needed, and will maintain contact with partners within the college community and in the greater Sarasota/Bradenton area. Counselors participate in the on-call rotation and the Pre-College summer program as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Support: 60% Academic Year

• Provides intake assessment and individual/group psychotherapy within a brief framework.
• May provide supervision of trainees when appropriate to license.
• In cases of referral to off campus-counseling agencies/hospital, provide complete follow through and after care assistance to students.
• Assure confidentiality of the student and liability protection of the College through appropriate record keeping.
• Provide timely and accurate documentation or rendered services.
• Shares emergency on-call duties with colleagues throughout the entire academic year and during the Pre-College summer program.
• Participate in Counseling Center staff clinical review meetings and consult with psychiatrist regarding shared cases.
• Serve as a campus representative for determining the need to Baker Act a student into treatment when deemed necessary.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Outreach and Programming: 30% Academic Year

• Takes the lead on campus programming and outreach development.
• Engaged in monthly outreach and programming through the PCC or in conjunction with another campus group.
• Attend Student Life Programming meetings.
• Assists in the training of various professional and paraprofessional staff and student support groups in need of instruction in crisis intervention, communication skills, referral process, etc.
• Attends Student Life Department Staff meetings.
• Serve on College Committees as requested.

Case Management: 10% Academic Year

• May be asked to serve as a member of the Student Care Team.
• Model sensitivity to diversity and international populations.
• When necessary, work with Student Life to complete mandated assessments such as alcohol assessments and mental status checks.
• Provides consultation services to all faculty and staff on matters dealing with the distressing student, assessment of behavior and the referral process.

• Excellent organizational and communications skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to maintain complete confidentiality.
• Knowledge of substance abuse issues and the ability to assess severe psychopathology is necessary.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

• Advanced degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or related field (master’s level and above).
• Current licensure (or license eligible within one year) by the State of Florida.
• Demonstrated experience in providing brief therapy, crisis intervention, group therapy, outreach, care coordination and case management.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.).
• Three years previous experience in a college counseling center or outpatient mental health setting.
