This position provides mental health and wellness services to assist domestic and international students in the University Residence Halls/Neighborhoods so that students can attain their education and academic goals.
The South Neighborhood houses a large, diverse student population, including first-year, first generation, and James Madison College students. Residence hall staff increasingly encounter mental health concerns beyond their training. While CAPS provides center-based services, embedded support is essential for timely intervention, reducing crisis escalation, and promoting student retention and wellbeing. The Embedded Social Worker or Counselor will provide brief individual counseling and crisis support within the neighborhood; identify and intervene early for students at risk; consult with Residence Life staff and collaborate with housing partners; deliver psychoeducation and wellness program tailored to the residential community.
University Health and Wellbeing adheres to University policy allowing a hybrid work schedule with expectation of two non-consecutive remote days per week.
This is a flex position with service expected through the duration of the academic year (August-May).
The job requires:
Demonstrated interest and experience in university-based counseling services and knowledge of mental health issues and challenges affecting domestic and international university students such as a resident assistant, graduate hall director or student leader; evidence of ability to reach out and engage with students; experience working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders demonstrated in application of multicultural counseling principles including evidence-based interventions; creative leadership skills and commitment to innovation.
The Unit is also accepting candidates with a current State of Michigan Social Work License (LMSW) in good standing OR a current Limited License (LLMSW) in good standing with capability of being fully licensed within 3 years. Limited license holders must be supervised by a fully licensed Social Worker (LMSW) until fully licensed.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, citizenship, age, disability or protected veteran status.
