Job Purpose

Counsel II, Sr. Principal attorneys are responsible for litigation defense of all Honda product lines, including product liability lawsuits where the exposure is in the millions of dollars. Because of the complex nature of these cases and the high potential exposure, they require special skills and high levels of experience. The cases have also become much more complex because they now frequently involve issues related to new technologies in our vehicles that provide advanced systems for driver assistance systems (ADAS). In addition to the vehicle cases, Counsel II attorneys also handle litigation involving ATVs, side-by-sides, motorcycles, power equipment, and HondaJet

Key Accountabilities

  • Legal advice and services: Provide high-quality legal services and advice in a timely and cost-effective manner, and execute legal activities, to enable the applicable Honda divisions to meet legal obligations and reduce risk for complex legal matters
  • Litigation: Prepare and coordinate litigation cases for applicable Honda entity, develop defense strategy and provide the business with regular updates and advice, and manage outside counsel and expert fees, to reach the best long-term solution for Honda in complex high-risk cases
  • Knowledge management: Follow changes in all relevant federal and state laws and regulations, and exchange and share legal knowledge within the applicable Honda entity/division/department, as well as train Honda associates in legal best practices, to improve the awareness, quality, and effectiveness of the legal function
  • Projects: Participate in the planning and execution of assigned AHM Law & IP projects with a regional focus

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
  • Admittance to the California Bar
  • At least 5-6 years of heavy product liability experience preferably in the automotive industry
  • Must have good knowledge of the law area they support
  • Substantial experience in managing projects, preferably experience managing high volume pattern litigation
