Department: Corrections

Pay: $27.44 per hour

Work Schedule: Various Hours/Various Days, Including Holidays, Weekends, and some Overtime may be required.

Leads, directs, coaches, and supervises a team of Corrections Officers on an assigned shift in a 24-hour correctional facility within the Department of Corrections.

Performance Management

  • Supervise staff and assigns shift coverage, priorities and projects for the facility; assign work and evaluate performance.
  • Assist in interviewing and hiring of Corrections Officer applicants; lead orientation and training of new staff.
  • Review and approve timecards for staff.
  • Establish priorities and guides staff in adherence to policies, procedures, and best practices; provide support and clarification for staff who violate policy and procedures.
  • Review and evaluate employee performance, ensuring staff are trained and provide feedback in knowledge and adherence to required standards.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on facility policies and procedures and lead by example.

Facility Management

  • Monitor the care and security of clients and staff and an emphasis on security, behavior change, leadership, and modeling of prosocial attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors.
  • Admit clients in and out of the facility, verify client court records and status, and assist with the intake screening and orientation of new clients.
  • Ensure that staff perform drug/alcohol screens on clients, as needed, to ensure that they follow program requirements
  • Schedule and conduct area and room searches to ensure facility is free of contraband.
  • Ensure that medication procedures are followed with accurate documentation.
  • Review reports and other communications to maintain awareness of activities and ensure accuracy.
  • Investigate incidents and determine consequences.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure that staff monitor client activities, enforce rules, and expectations, and room cleanliness; Ensure the completion assigned head counts to monitor and account for client whereabouts.
  • Oversee the maintenance of facility supply inventories; the monitoring of client personal property when client goes AWOL or a warrant is filed and a client is removed from the program.
  • Assign staff duties to conduct checks to ensure clients are at their assigned location; maintain client records identifying room location and bed number, and level client is on in the program, if applicable.
  • Appraise and update client behavior information; prepare narrative and non-narrative reports regarding client behavior and status; monitor client activities.
  • Prepare and maintain various reports and statistics.
  • Conduct facility inspections and quality assurance checks and documents/facilitates corrective actions.

Minimum Qualifications: A combination of two years of experience working with juvenile or adult clients in a program or facility environment, with progressive responsibilities. One year of supervisory work experience. Professional references are required to verify the related work experience. Must be at least 21 years of age. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions. Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screens. Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.

Preferred Qualifications: A combination of four (4) years of experience working with juvenile or adult clients in a program or facility environment, with progressive responsibilities. Two (2) years supervisory work experience. Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or closely related field. Transcript verifying education credits is required.
