Job Description

Works under general supervision to perform interviews, collect evidence and thoroughly investigate criminal activity within the Division of Corrections.

Pay Grade: 51

Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education

Minimum Qualifications

• Five (5) years of experience in correctional counseling, correctional officer or investigator; AND
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in social work, criminal justice or closely related field; OR
• An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.
• PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
  

Duties and Responsibilities

• Testifies in court and civil service hearings, conducts interviews and obtains statements from witnesses.
• Interviews with defendants and witnesses.
• Verifies information obtained to establish accuracy of facts and/or evidence.
• Investigates criminal misconduct or use of force complaints by correction employees.
• Collects and handles evidence to preserve chain of custody.
• Develops detailed and accurate investigations.
• May be assigned special investigations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
  

KSAs

• Extensive knowledge of the law, investigative techniques and court proceedings.
• Knowledge of basic principles and techniques of investigating.
• Ability to present findings in clear, logical, impartial and properly documented reports.
• Ability to evaluate reliability and credibility of statements and witnesses.
• Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations, making decisions and solving problems.
• Ability to write meaningful investigative reports.
• Ability to conduct criminal background inquiries.
• Ability to locate and communicate with witnesses.
• Ability to analyze factors involved in the case.

Special Requirements

• Works shift and/or irregular hours with required overtime.
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Must pass TB test and drug test.
• Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license or secure one by date of hire
• Must be able to work in a prison environment
• Will participate in annual in-service and other training programs as required.
