The Corrections Agriculture Beef Program Supervisor oversees the Wyoming Honor Farm’s beef cattle operation, including herd production, breeding, calving, feeding, livestock health, grazing, and range management. This position supervises and trains an offender work crew performing daily livestock and agricultural duties. Responsibilities include planning and assigning work, teaching proper animal-handling and agricultural practices, monitoring safety and security, maintaining operational records, and ensuring the humane and efficient care of the livestock. This position reports to the Agricultural Program Manager.

The Wyoming Honor Farm (WHF) is a minimum-custody facility located one mile north of Riverton, Wyoming, housing approximately 300 adult male offenders. Established in 1931, WHF has operated agricultural programs since 1988. These programs play an integral role in rehabilitation by providing offenders with opportunities to develop teamwork, patience, responsibility, and respect through the daily care and handling of animals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

• Provides instruction on agricultural management topics.
• Beef Herd Management Program provides instruction on livestock nourishment, herd health, marketing, veterinary practices, equipment operation, and fencing techniques.
• Supervises, directs, and instructs daily work and training assignments for all inmates in the program.
• Develops training aids and instructional course materials for the beef program or teaches and demonstrates training techniques.
• Determines equipment needs and acquires equipment, materials, and instructional supplies in accordance with program needs and cost analysis.
• Participates in the overall management and assessment of individual inmates by providing written staff reports, written or verbal work performance evaluations, and attending team meetings to discuss inmate management issues.
• Working within a fixed budget, order and maintain program equipment and supplies, and track and manage inmate payroll.
• Assists security personnel to ensure the security and accountability of all inmates in the program and other departments when the facility is on emergency status, including chemical control and tool control.
• Observe inmate work performance and behavior to encourage positive performance, provide direction for improvement, and initiate corrective action when necessary.
• Attends pre-service and regular in-service training to stay abreast of inmate management issues and ensure facility policies, procedures, and security protocols are implemented and followed.
• Assists other work training programs, as needed, in managing inmates and performing duties, including Crop Production and Wild Horse Program.

Preference may be given to applicants with a background in Corrections.

KNOWLEDGE:

• Agricultural knowledge specific to a specialty.
• Livestock nourishment, veterinary care, and animal behavior.
• Safety practices and procedures.
• Federal and State laws regarding livestock brands, grazing rights, and transportation.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Exposure to hazardous materials, bodily fluids, chemicals, biohazards, potentially explosive, and/or the elements.
• Must be able to drive vehicles and/or operate farm and construction equipment.
• Exposure to inside and outside environmental conditions, at times in inclement weather.
• Walking on hard and/or uneven surfaces.
