of Work
This position reports to the Correctional Programs Director and functions in the Programs Section of a minimum custody male correctional facility. This position provides transitional and re-entry programs and oversees rehabilitation programming for offenders. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Reviewing, analyzing and evaluating various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation and personal observation.
2. Training, observing, evaluating and supervising Correctional Case Managers in their duties and responsibilities to ensure that the Programs Section meets the necessary goals.
3. Working with community agencies to enrich programs and establish new program activities and coordinating program activities with custody staff.
4. Operating as a certified employee, this position may be subject to assist in any certified capacity as needed which includes custody department and Administrative Services.
5. Performing crisis intervention and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
6. Being accountable for the development, implementation and maintenance of one or more major and broad programs for offenders. The primary program areas are offender classification, correctional programs (incentive wage, adult basic education, volunteer programs, religion and recreation), and supportive counseling.
7. Coordinating of Programs activities with custody staff to develop, implement, coordinate and supervise programs associated with offenders’ treatment, re-entry, and or behavior.
8. Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
Documented knowledge of supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessment.
Documented knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
Documented 12 months (1 year) of correctional program experience.

Salary Range
$39,244 - $68,679

About Wake Correctional Center
Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh is a minimum custody prison for adult males. It is primarily a “work” unit in that 80 percent of the offenders leave the facility each day for incentive wage work assignments in various state agencies in the Wake County area. Offenders also work at other area adult correctional-facilities and Correction Enterprises operations. There are also offenders nearing their release date that participate on the work release program, leaving the facility to work for businesses in the community. Incentive wage work assignments are also available at the prison in the food service, clothes house, janitorial, landscaping, maintenance, canteen, and recreation areas.
Wake Technical Community College works with the prison to provide full-time vocational classes in Certified Communications, Heating/Air Conditioning and Electrical Wiring. Part-time classes in Blueprint Reading and Horticulture are also available. Educational classes in GED preparation, college-level courses and college correspondence classes are available.

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference
