of Work
This position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders at a medium-custody correctional facility. The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling. Other responsibilities of this position include the following:
- Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public whether verbally and/or written.
- Defending oneself against attack by violent offenders and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
- Conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
- Demonstrating and instructing offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
- Performing crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
- Training, observing, evaluating, and supervising effectively subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities.
- Accounting for supplies and equipment, developing, implementing, and managing Correctional Programs.
- Monitoring off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe and secure manner at any time of day.

Salary Range: $39,244 - $68,679

The salary grade for this position is NC08 State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.
About the Division of Institutions
The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Pender Correctional Institution is located in Burgaw, North Carolina and houses up to 768 male offenders in a medium custody facility.
