This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. of Work
This position will be assigned to Johnston Correctional Institution; position will be assigned to a housing unit in the custody area. This position will carry a case load of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
This position will also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of inmates such as inmate work assignments, work release, education, or recreation; as well as transition planning and coordinating. Effective verbal/written communication with other staff, inmates, and the general public. Be capable of defending oneself against attach by violent persons. Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with visual/audio surveillance of assigned work area. Accurately operate office machines/prepare written reports/forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources. Demonstrate/instruct inmates in the proper safe use of tools, equipment/supplies. Review, analyze/evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interview/documentation/ personal observation. Perform crisis intervention/routine counseling to include suicide prevention. Account for supplies/equipment. Implement/manage correctional programs. This position will be required to work some evenings, weekends & holidays.

Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408

Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

About The Division of Institutions:
The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
