General Statement

In cooperation with the Corps Officer, assist in a dynamic and creative social media & Ministry Assistant to support our efforts in social media marketing, youth ministry, and community outreach. This role will be responsible for managing our social media platforms, assisting with youth programs, data input, donation collection, and supporting seasonal Salvation Army programs. Assist in developing social, spiritual, and musical programs which are central to the Salvation Army beliefs. Develop community outreach programs which relate to and meet the needs of people who speak Spanish as their primary language.

Essential Functions

Social Media:

  • Develop and implement social media strategies to increase engagement on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms.
  • Create and schedule posts, graphics, and videos to promote events and programs.
  • Monitor social media accounts, respond to messages, and engage with the community.
  • Create opportunities to engage with community through networking with existing clientele, other agencies, and other Christian churches within service area

Youth Ministry Support:

  • Assist in planning and coordinating for children and teens programs and activities through existing Salvation Army programs, including Sunday school, Junior Soldiers, Corps Cadets, and SAY Troops.
  • Provide support during youth events, helping with setup, coordination, and supervision.
  • Support as directed, existing spiritual and social programming at SLO
  • Help grow the worship band and the other music sections to support ministry at the San Luis Obispo Corps.
  • Understanding of children/vulnerable adults’ safety protocol (Protect the Mission) as per Salvation Army policy and procedure and required mandated reporter

Administrative & Outreach Support:

  • Input and manage data related to programs but is not limited to Corps Management, and stats.
  • Help collect and organize donations for our social services programs if needed.

Assist in coordinating seasonal Salvation Army programs (e.g., Angel Tree, Red Kettle, Back-to-School drives, VBS,).

  • Manage and maintain all related statistical reports, activity records, and records for the use of assigned vehicles when necessary.
  • Assist with Christmas kettle programs, as well as seasonal programs for Easter, VBS, Thanksgiving, Back-to-school, and Christmas. This may include pick up and distribution of toys and food as needed.
  • Always maintain a professional manner, upholding the integrity of The Salvation Army.
  • Attend staff and program related meetings, conferences, and training as required.
  • Perform other duties assigned that relate to fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Dependable, Self-starter and good team player and oriented detail.
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Additional Education helpful.
  • Basic computer knowledge and typing skills, including Word, Publisher, and Excel.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and complete all Protecting the Mission training.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class B California Driver’s License.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Have worked in Christian ministry with children and families

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Driving Test and clean MVR check (if applicable).
  • If working in vicinity of children a criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and use of various “office” programs
  • Able to advance the spiritual development of children and adults
  • Able to preach and lead a Salvation Army meeting in the absence of the Officer
