Job Description

Amazon Japan's Legal Department is looking for a talented attorney with approximately 5-12 years’ PQE to fill the position of Corporate Counsel, Seller Services.

(Attorneys with less than 5 years’ PQE may also apply for this role as Associate Corporate Counsel level.)

This position will be based in Amazon Japan’s Meguro headquarters.
Compensation is based on experience and includes equity compensation in the form of Restricted Stock Units.

Key job responsibilities
This attorney will support Amazon’s rapidly expanding third party marketplace and fulfillment services business in Japan and related cross-border projects. The attorney will negotiate and advise on various matters from commercial contracts to complex, high-dollar value transactions and cutting-edge business initiatives; provide day-to-day corporate and business law counseling; administer and resolve legal issues that arise in existing commercial relationships; be responsible for spotting and managing potential regulatory issues; and provide legal review of procedural and government compliance issues.

This attorney will also be expected to participate in other Amazon legal projects as directed, including handling pre-litigation legal disputes and inquiries.

About the team
The successful candidate will report to a long-term Associate General Counsel and Legal Director who has been working for Amazon Japan Legal for more than 11 years and who reports to the Japan Legal Vice President.

Basic Qualifications


- Law degree (J.D. or equivalent) from a leading university and law school.
- Licensed to practice law in Japan and/or the United States or other common law jurisdiction.
- Approximately 5+ years of legal experience (with several years of experience at a leading global law firm and/or in-house at a major multinational corporation).
- Outstanding legal and business judgment, drafting, negotiation, analytical, management and leadership skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to act as a business partner to senior management and clients of all levels.
- Native Level Japanese and Business Level English (have ability to communicate orally and in writing, draft agreements and negotiate in Japanese and English.)

Preferred Qualifications

- Law firm experience and In-house experience at an international corporation or a retail or e-commerce company.
- Experience working with the Japanese regulators.
- Familiarity with Japan’s regulatory landscape.
