Job Description

Copywriter

Department: Product & Services

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Toronto, ON

Reporting To: Tamara Tenenbaum

Compensation: CA$61,000 - CA$71,000 / year

At GS1 Canada, we believe in the power of global standards to transform the way we work and live.

GS1 Canada is looking for a Copywriter to translate approved product positioning and messaging into clear, consistent and compelling customer-facing content across our web, email, campaign and customer communication channels.

Reporting to the Director, Marketing, the successful candidate works closely with Product Marketing, Demand Generation, Lifecycle Marketing and Content & Digital Experience to produce content that helps customers understand our products, adopt them with confidence and stay engaged over time.

This is a writing and content production role. Positioning, messaging frameworks and value propositions are developed by Product Marketing; this role turns them into channel-ready content that performs.

This role is a hybrid role, requiring in-person attendance.

Key Responsibilities

Writing and content production
  • Write and edit customer-facing copy for web pages, emails, lifecycle communications, landing pages, campaign assets, customer announcements, paid and organic social, and product content.
  • Translate approved positioning, messaging frameworks and value propositions into channel-ready copy that is clear, accurate and customer-focused.
  • Adapt a single message across multiple channels, formats and audiences while maintaining consistency of meaning and voice.
  • Make complex product, data and standards subject matter understandable and useful to a business audience.
Cross-functional support
  • Partner with Product Marketing to convert launch messaging and product narratives into customer-facing content for web, email and campaign channels.
  • Partner with Demand Generation to write campaign, paid media and social copy that supports awareness, acquisition and lead nurture.
  • Partner with Lifecycle Marketing to write onboarding, adoption, retention, renewal and operational customer communications.
  • Partner with Content & Digital Experience on website copy, information architecture input, navigation labelling and content optimization.
Quality, voice and standards
  • Apply and help maintain brand voice, editorial standards, plain language principles and digital accessibility guidelines across customer-facing channels.
  • Provide editorial review, proofreading, and quality control on customer-facing marketing content produced across the Marketing team.
  • Apply SEO and GEO best practices, using content and search performance data to improve clarity, discoverability and conversion.
  • Maintain consistency of product names, terminology, and customer-facing language across channels.
Translation coordination
  • Coordinate French language translation of customer-facing content with internal partners, managing timelines and quality review so both languages are released together.
Workflow and ways of working
  • Manage multiple concurrent content requests, working from approved briefs and production schedules to deliver on time and to standard.
  • Use AI tools to support drafting, editing and content adaptation, while maintaining brand voice, factual accuracy, and appropriate review and governance standards.
  • Contribute to content planning, prioritization, and continuous improvement across the Marketing team.
Scope Boundaries
  • This role is focused on customer-facing marketing content. • Sales enablement materials, sales presentations and internal sales resources are owned by Product Marketing.
  • Corporate and organizational communications are owned by Corporate Communications.
  • Positioning, messaging frameworks and value proposition development are owned by Product Marketing.
  • Content requests reach this role through marketing planning and approved campaign or content briefs.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Position Requirements
  • 3 to 5 years of copywriting or content writing experience in a marketing, agency or in-house environment.
  • Portfolio demonstrating customer-facing writing across web, email and campaign channels.
  • Experience writing to an established brand voice and approved messaging frameworks rather than creating positioning independently.
  • Experience writing for business or professional audiences, ideally in a B2B, technology, data, standards or regulated environment.
  • Working knowledge of SEO and GEO principles, content management systems, email marketing platforms and digital accessibility standards.
  • Experience using content and search performance data to improve copy is considered an asset.
  • Fully bilingual in English and French, with the ability to review and approve translated customer-facing content for accuracy, tone and brand voice, and to coordinate French translation with internal stakeholders or external vendors.

Critical Competencies
  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills, with the ability to make complex or technical subject matter clear and useful to customers.
  • Strong attention to detail and consistency across high volumes of content.
  • Ability to take direction and feedback from multiple stakeholders while protecting the clarity and quality of the writing.
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort managing multiple concurrent deadlines.
  • Sound judgement about accuracy, tone and what is appropriate to publish.
  • Curiosity about customers, products and how content drives measurable business outcomes.
