The Instructional Technologist provides leadership and expertise in instructional technology, learning management system administration, and learning design to support effective, accessible, and high-quality teaching and learning across all instructional modalities. The position serves as the College’s primary functional administrator for Canvas, supports the implementation and effective use of instructional technologies, and collaborates with faculty, College departments, Information Technology, VCCS personnel, and technology vendors on instructional technology systems, integrations, and related technical matters.

Job Responsibilities

Learning Management System Administration

  • Serve as the College’s primary functional administrator for Canvas, including configuration, term, course and section processes, user roles and permissions, and approved third-party integrations.
  • Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot LMS functionality, including access, enrollments, grades, submissions, content, permissions, and integrations.
  • Coordinate LMS updates, testing, integrations, and implementation of new or modified functionality.
  • Maintain procedures, documentation, communications, and resources related to LMS administration and use.
  • Coordinate with Information Technology, VCCS personnel, and technology vendors on LMS integrations, authentication, security, system access, data exchange, and other technical matters.

Learning Design

  • Consult with faculty on the design, development, and continuous improvement of in-person, online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses.
  • Apply learning design principles to support course organization, learning activities, assessment, student engagement, learning outcomes, and effective use of instructional technologies.
  • Develop templates, resources, and other tools that support effective and consistent course design and delivery.

Instructional Technology

  • Evaluate, recommend, and support the adoption and implementation of instructional technologies that enhance teaching and learning.
  • Consult with faculty on the effective use of instructional technologies and provide related training, professional development, and resources.
  • Monitor emerging instructional technologies and recommend tools, practices, and improvements to Academics.
  • Support students using Canvas and related instructional technologies and identify recurring issues requiring improvements to resources, communication, training, or processes.

Online Learning Quality and Accessibility

  • Promote quality, consistency, and accessibility in online and technology-enhanced instruction through established College and VCCS standards and practices.
  • Support compliance with applicable digital accessibility requirements for online courses, instructional materials, and instructional technologies, in collaboration with appropriate College personnel.
  • Collaborate with faculty on effective course organization, design, delivery, and digital accessibility.
  • Support continuous improvement of online and technology-enhanced learning through review of practices, resources, technologies, and recurring needs.

Other Duties

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

This position will report directly to the Vice President of Instruction and Student Development.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

· Master’s degree in instructional technology, educational technology, instructional design, education, or a related field.

· Minimum of two years of experience administering or providing advanced functional support for a learning management system such as Canvas or a comparable platform.

· Minimum of two years of experience applying learning design principles to the design, development, or improvement of courses and instructional materials.

· Experience supporting instructional technologies, including troubleshooting issues and communicating effectively with users of varying technical proficiency.

· Knowledge of digital accessibility and effective practices for technology-enhanced teaching and learning.

· Strong communication, organizational, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to work independently, exercise professional judgment, and manage multiple priorities.

Additional Considerations

· Two or more years of direct Canvas administration experience.

· Experience with LMS integrations, student information systems, accessibility tools, or other instructional technologies.

· Experience supporting instructional technology, learning design, online learning, or hybrid instruction in a community college or other higher education environment.

· Experience providing faculty training or professional development.
