Passionate about building relationships and community? Love planning events and programs? Eager to help lead a public service team and mentor staff? Chapel Hill Public Library is looking for you! We're hiring an Adult Programming & Outreach Coordinator for our Adult Services Division.

The Adult Programming & Outreach Coordinator supports the mission of Chapel Hill Public Library by developing and executing a community-centered programming & outreach strategy for adults of all ages in collaboration with the Adult Services Manager and staff. A successful candidate will build meaningful relationships with library patrons, interdepartmental colleagues, nonprofit organizations, and other community partners.

Examples of duties

What you can expect to be doing (Essential Functions):

  • Model outstanding, knowledgeable customer service. Be friendly, helpful, responsive, and engaged. Contribute to a welcoming, comfortable, environment.
  • Coordinate, develop and deploy an engaging array of adult programs and outreach. Collaborate with other staff, partner organizations, and volunteers to facilitate and plan programs. Continually explore new and innovative outreach partnerships to meet the needs of the local community. Regularly assess programming and outreach effectiveness and quality with a goal of continual improvement.
  • Foster and maintain strong collaborative relationships with local partner agencies, library peers, and Town departments that serve adults.
  • Monitor trends and best practices in public library programming, outreach, and Reader’s Advisory services for adults.
  • Assist with shift scheduling, operations management, and staff supervision in the Adult Services Division.
  • Contribute to the hiring, training, and development of a friendly, flexible, customer-focused staff.
  • Contribute to Library Management Team. Collaborate with library administration and managers to achieve strategic goals.
  • Serve on Town-wide teams or initiatives.
  • Lead library projects and initiatives.
  • Complete other tasks as required.

This position requires supervising and monitoring the performance of other employees.

What are the physical demands?

This work is performed sitting, standing, walking, squatting, reaching, pushing, and bending. It requires a high degree of dexterity. It requires lifting 10-15 pounds.

Where and how do you work?

This work is usually performed inside a busy public library and in an office setting. Requires some weekend and evening hours.

Knowledge of:

  • Library policies and procedures.
  • Integrated Library Systems (ILS).
  • Project management techniques.
  • Grant writing and administration.
  • User Centered design theories.
  • Assessment tools & techniques for library programs and outreach
  • Current trends in library programming and outreach for adults.
  • Community engagement

Ability to:

  • Positively interact with a diverse clientele.
  • Interpret and communicate library policies and procedures.
  • Execute projects and meet deadlines.
  • Use web-based software systems
  • Use Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or similar tools
  • Solve problems and make sound decisions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Model behavior that is consistent with our values of RESPECT

What is education and/or experience do you need to be considered for this job?

Education

A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. A Master of Library Science (MLS) degree is preferred.

Experience:

A minimum 3 years of experience working with adults of all ages in a public library setting. Experience planning programs and outreach for adults preferred. Experience supervising a team or department preferred.
