  • Salary commencing in line with Council Band 8, $128 188.03 per annum plus 12% superannuation
  • Commencing September 2026

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a highly capable and collaborative financial professional to step into the role of Coordinator Financial Accounting. In this position, you’ll act as a trusted advisor and leader, playing a key role in ensuring the integrity, compliance, and effectiveness of Council’s financial accounting functions.

You’ll lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of a broad range of financial services—helping to drive high-quality outcomes while supporting a culture of continuous improvement across the organisation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of annual financial statements in compliance with Australian Accounting Standards (AAS), relevant legislation, and regulatory requirements
  • Manage and coordinate external year-end and interim audits, working closely with the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office, and support internal audit activities as required
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of Victorian Grants Commission returns and acquittals to funding bodies
  • Ensure timely and accurate delivery of all tax compliance activities, including Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) returns and Business Activity Statements (BAS)
  • Review and oversee month-end processes, including general ledger reconciliations and subsidiary systems
  • Manage Council’s investment portfolio, including liaising with financial institutions and overseeing cash flow analysis and reporting
  • Provide oversight of Accounts Payable and Finance Officer functions, including review and approval of payment runs
  • Manage the corporate card program, including governance, compliance, and reporting
  • Deliver expert financial advice and support to the finance team and stakeholders across Council to ensure informed decision-making and strong financial outcomes

Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role, you will bring a combination of strong technical expertise and the ability to build effective working relationships across the organisation. You will demonstrate:

  • Well-developed interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate, influence, coach, and build capability across teams
  • Strong business partnering capability, with experience supporting and guiding stakeholders in managing financial responsibilities
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial information into clear, practical insights for a range of audiences, including staff, executives, and Councillors
  • Proven ability to identify risks or areas of concern early and take proactive, corrective action
  • High level of analytical thinking and problem-solving capability, with attention to detail and accuracy

Qualifications:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Accounting, Business, Commerce, or Economics
  • Professional accounting qualification such as CA or CPA (essential)

Experience:

  • Significant experience in financial accounting within a similar role
  • Experience working within Local Government or a complex public sector environment is highly regarded
