• This position is financed by a third-party, external to the Organization with funding provided by the donor. Although there is a commitment from the donor, the appointment may be terminated prior to indicate official end date of project, should the external funding for this position no longer be available. This position also carries, in principle, no expectation of renewal. Any potential subsequent extension will be subject to the terms of the Organization’s Staff Manual, to satisfactory performance and to availability of funds.

Tests/interviews in connection to this selection procedure will take place approximately 2-3 weeks after the deadline for applications. Applicants are kindly requested to plan their availability during this period accordingly, in case they are short-listed.

​Selected candidates will be expected to report for duty approximately two to three months after receiving an offer of employment at the latest.

This selection exercise may be used to generate a reserve list of suitable candidates that may be used to address Organization's similar staffing needs in the future.

INTRODUCTION OF THE POST

Within the Executive Directorate Investigation Support/Counter Terrorism, and under the direction of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) and Vulnerable Targets (VT) Assistant Director, the Chemical and Explosives Terrorism Prevention (CMX) Unit Coordinator manages the CMX Unit’s daily operations.

He/she leads a team of staff by providing clear direction, enforcing compliance with policies, and ensuring timely, high-quality deliverables.

The incumbent is responsible for implementing all routine and ad hoc tasks under the CMX Unit’s operational modality and for driving the execution of the CMX Programme.

PRIMARY DUTIES

DUTY 1 - Strategic Planning and Leadership

• Lead the development and implementation of the CMX Unit’s operational and strategic plans in alignment with INTERPOL’s Strategic Plan and CBRNE and VT’s Framework.
• Proactively identify operational gaps and systemic challenges, and recommend evidence-based improvements to workflows, processes, and resource allocation to maximize impact.
• Represent the CMX Unit in high-level strategic discussions and contribute to the development of INTERPOL-wide frameworks on CBRNE threats.

DUTY 2 - Team Leadership and Human Resources Management

• Lead, supervise and monitor a multidisciplinary team of Specialized Officers, Analytical Staff, and the CMX Project Manager, aligned with INTERPOL’s mission and values.

DUTY 3 - Technical Expertise and Advice

• Serve as the lead subject-matter expert on chemical and explosive threats to support the Assistant Director and Member countries.
• Maintain comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge of global trends, emerging threats, regulatory frameworks, and law enforcement responses in the Chemical and Explosive domain.
• Exercise rigorous quality control over all analytical reports, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and full alignment with INTERPOL’s standards.
• Lead the development, review, and continuous improvement of training programs, curricula, exercises and operations related to chemical and explosive threats, ensuring they are practical, scalable, and aligned with evolving global threats and best practices.

DUTY 4 - Stakeholder Engagement and International Coordination

• Act as the primary point of contact for INTERPOL Member Countries, international organizations, and external partners on all matters relating to chemical and explosive terrorism.
• Build and sustain a global network of experts.
• Collaborate with the other CBRNE units, the Counterterrorism Operations Sub-Directorate, other INTERPOL Directorates and Regional Bureaus to ensure cross-functional synergy.

DUTY 5 - Innovation and New Initiative Development

• Identify opportunities for new projects, funding streams, and partnerships aligned with the Sub-Directorate’s strategic priorities.

DUTY 6 - Additional Responsibilities

• Perform any other duties as assigned by the hierarchy.

REQUIREMENTS

Education required

• Three to four years' education at a university or specialized higher education establishment in a relevant field.

Experience required

• Experienced police officer, able to demonstrate professional experience and training in law enforcement.
• Minimum of 5 years of CBRNE law enforcement experience preferably including specialized training in the Chemical and Explosive field.
• Proven experience as a Senior Manager with a strong track record in leading and managing teams.
• Demonstrated strong leadership qualities, including strategic thinking, decision-making, and the ability to inspire trust and to empower staff through positive mentorship.
• Specialized training in law enforcement operations or related disciplines is highly desirable.
• International work experience is considered a significant asset.
• Experience in designing, developing, or delivering training programs and course curricula is an advantage.
• Prior engagement with external donors, international organizations, or multi-stakeholder projects is preferred.

Languages

• Professional proficiency in both written and spoken English.
• Proficiency in a second official working language of the Organization (Arabic, French or Spanish) would be an additional asset.

• Strong computer skills, including proficiency in office software and, where applicable, domain-specific tools.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, with good listening ability.
• Proven ability to coach, monitor, motivate, and develop staff.

As part of our commitment to transparency throughout our recruitment process, INTERPOL's Staff Manual Regulation 11.4: Age-limit, which states that:

'Officials of the Organization shall not normally be retained in service beyond the age of 65 years. The Secretary General may, in exceptional cases and in the interests of the Organization, extend this age limit, in which case he shall inform the official concerned sufficiently in advance.'

Given this Regulation and in case candidates reach the age of 65 during the potential duration of the appointment, should they be selected for the position and the process proceed to appointment, the employment period may be affected by this regulatory limit and may therefore not extend for the full standard contract duration as published in the vacancy notice.
