The Cooking Instructor for Kids is responsible for planning and leading engaging, age-appropriate culinary education programs for children and youth. This role supports the YMCA’s mission by promoting healthy living, life skills, and confidence through hands-on cooking experiences in a safe, inclusive, and fun environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan and deliver interactive cooking classes for children (typically ages 5–14), aligned with YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility

  • Teach basic cooking skills, kitchen safety, food preparation, and nutrition concepts using age-appropriate methods.

  • Promote healthy eating habits and introduce children to a variety of foods and cultures.

  • Prepare lesson plans, recipes, and materials in advance, ensuring activities are engaging and developmentally appropriate.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen/classroom environment in compliance with health and safety standards.

  • Supervise participants at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being.

  • Adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs and abilities of all participants.

  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding program goals, schedules, and participant progress.

  • Model positive behavior and serve as a role model for children.

  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including child abuse prevention and mandatory reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 18 years.

  • Experience working with children in an educational, recreational, or culinary setting.

  • Basic knowledge of cooking techniques, food safety, and nutrition.

  • Ability to lead groups of children in a positive, engaging manner.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to maintain a safe and learning environment.

  • Culinary training, teaching experience, or related certification.

  • ServSafe or food safety certification (or willingness to obtain).

  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

  • Experience working in a YMCA or similar youth-serving organization.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Ability to perform hands-on cooking activities and supervise active children.

  • Indoor kitchen or classroom setting.

  • May involve exposure to heat, kitchen equipment, and food allergens.

  • Flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, depending on program schedules.
