Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The Cook is responsible for preparation, cooking and of food to the shelter clients in ways that enhance customer satisfaction and for ensuring this is done in accordance with hygiene, safety and food handling standards and regulations and within budget guidelines.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Oversee the effective operation of the kitchen.
  • Maintain excellent standards in hygiene, safety, and all aspects of food handling.
  • Ensure all equipment is cleaned, used, and maintained properly and that all storage and work areas are kept clean and orderly.
  • Ensure all staff are aware of dietary restrictions declared by clients.
  • Order food supplies and manage inventory, directing the storage and rotation of incoming supplies.
  • Control waste with good stock storage, rotation, temperature control and menu planning.
  • Participate in meetings and training as required.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Oversees the purchasing and budgeting of food, product supplies, and cleaning supplies.
  • May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works in a kitchen
  • This position requires long hours standing on hard surfaces.
  • This position requires individuals to work in close proximity to others in a fast-paced and sometimes crowded environment. The work can be physically taxing and requires good mobility.
  • This position requires individuals to keep hair clean, orderly and properly fixed.
  • Use of various cleaning chemicals and tools (ex: broom, mop, vacuum, etc.).
  • Use of kitchen tools and appliances (ex: knives, stove/oven, dishwasher, etc.)
  • This position requires individuals to wear appropriate footwear and clothing.
  • No travel requirements for this position

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Education and Knowledge

  • High school diploma plus culinary education and training of one academic year.
  • Food Safe Certification is required.
  • Standard First Aid + CPR & AED.
  • Food Safe Certification

Experience and Knowledge:

  • A minimum of two years of experience in a kitchen management or chef role including responsibilities for budgeting.

  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army
  • Careful attention to detail particularly in regard to all aspects of safety
  • Demonstrated creativity in menu planning.
  • Ability to use knowledge of effective body mechanics to handle bulk items and to tolerate standing, walking, bending, and lifting for extended periods.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent with a vulnerable sector check
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $18.25 to $22.23 with a maximum of $26.20.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
