JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Executive Chef, the cook functions as part of the Food Production Team to produce consistently high quality food for patients, personnel, and visitors. Provides services for all age groups, infant to elderly.

Customers include: employees, vendors, patients, visitors, volunteers, and physicians.

ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY

D. Primary Customer Groups: Patients, Families, Public, Nutrition Services and Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa Colleagues

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

A. Follows menus and production guides for type and quantity of items to be prepared for all service points. Utilizes principles for batch cooking. Records actual number of servings prepared.

B. Prepares and serves all food items according to therapeutic diets, standardized recipes, menus and service guidelines including quality and appearance.

C. Assembles meal trays to patient care units, including late trays, room service meal trays, and nourishments for general and therapeutic diets on an as needed basis.

D. Follows HACCP techniques and other food safety guidelines in preparation, storage, handling, and holding of all food items including leftovers.

E. Covers, dates, and labels all food items in storage. Rotates food products and other items on a “first-in, first-out” basis.

F. Maintains quality monitor records related to food and equipment to ensure food safety.

G. Completes restocking of work area to include supplies, condiments, silverware and dishware as needed according to departmental procedure.

H. Demonstrates ability to operate and maintain all equipment in work unit according to skills checklist and/or operating manual. Checks equipment to ensure proper operation and reports any problems to supervisor or maintenance by completing a work order.

I. Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of work areas according to department checklists.

J. Demonstrates effective communication skills by respectfully sharing necessary information to customers, co-workers and supervisors in a timely manner.

K. Provides assistance to customers and co-workers in a courteous and cooperative manner.

L. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.

M. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures

and treatments.

N. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.

O. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors.

P. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.

Q. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

A. Assists with catered functions as needed.

B. Supports efficient use of department resources.

C. Attends department and unit meetings, in-services and training sessions, and huddles.

D. Participates in effective training and orientation of co-workers.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education [formal]:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent certificate preferred.

B. Experience:

  1. 2-3 years experience in food service required.

C. Special Skills and Competencies:

  1. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Ability to perform detailed assignments, follow directions, work under pressure, and readily adapt to change in routine and work assignments.
  3. Completes the following mandatory courses (check all that apply).

Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Mandatory Reporting: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse requirement within 6 months of hire and renews this requirement every 5 years.

Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
