Position Purpose summary:
The position provides food preparation to service the community lunch and dinner meals and Evergreen Shelter guest meals. The cook is responsible for providing quality food according to the approved menu, follow safety, hygiene and nutrition standards and work as part of the Food Service Team.
Accountabilities:
FOOD PRODUCTION:
The incumbent is responsible for the duties listed below as well as other similar duties that may arise in the daily course of a kitchen.
- Able to cook, bake and taste food on a consistent basis, including but not limited to meats, fish, vegetables, soups, casseroles sauces, desserts, cookies, muffins, sandwiches, and salads
- Able to organize and have food prepared on time for meal services that are of high quality and are well presented. For some meals, provide written directions on servings and warm up directions.
- Accurately prepare portions of food to minimize waste
- Prepare food for special events
- Demonstrate flexibility in making menu substitutions when warranted
- Prepare for next day, including making sure items are removed from the freezer as per Food Safe standards
- Adhere to principles/directives of Food Safe in storage, handling, and preparation of food
- Labelling, dating, and storing foods in kitchen following Food Safe guidelines
- Consistently keeps work areas clean and sanitized
- May assist Food Coordinator with ensuring that orders are correct, properly rotated, stored and labelled
- Ensure the correct meal is served when requested as per dietary requisitions
- Operate all equipment safely as per operating procedures
- Work cooperatively with Food Coordinator, staff and volunteers for a smooth, professional delivery of services
- Assist with managing leftovers and clean up at the end of shift as needed
- Take directions from Food Service Coordinator
- Monitor and records food temperature during storage, preparation, cooking, and service all phases of food served ( HACCP standards are to be met)
- Instruct and direct volunteers in preparation duties
- May assist with cleaning tasks
- Able to be flexible with duties to ensure teamwork and cooperation
- Perform other related duties as required
RECORD KEEPING:
- Keeps simple records and completes incident reports as necessary
- Completing any required documentation as per the contracts for the programs
ADMINISTRATION:
- May place order for food supplies
- Assists Food Coordinator in planning menus
HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIROMENTAL:
- Cleans all food preparation devices ensuring they are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness using the appropriate cleaning products.
- Ensures the appropriate records are entered daily and filed. Reports any problems to the Food Coordinator.
- Ensures the security, safety, and sanitation of the kitchen in accordance with standards set out
- Ensure the kitchen, food storage, fridge/freezer are always kept clean and organized .
- Ensures high standards of sanitation and cleanliness are maintained throughout the kitchen, and food storage areas including removing kitchen waste.
- Demonstrate a high standard of personal hygiene.
- Is required to wear the full clean uniform and/or apron provided when on duty in the kitchen

COMMUNICATIONS:
- Communicates clearly with Food Coordinator and other staff, volunteers and guests in a positive and encouraging manner
- Ensure all contact with donors, the public, staff from other agencies, and with staff from other Salvation Army programs are courteous and professional
PERSONNEL:
Completes the required time sheet accurately recording hours worked including sick days and holidays, totals the hours, signs, and gives the time sheet to the Supervisor at the completion of each 2 week pay period.
Working Conditions:
The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the Kitchen/Dining Room, storage, and laundry areas at the Center of Hope.
The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Hot/Steamy environment
- Crowded in some cases
- Pressure with timelines
- Cuts, Burns and entering freezers
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Sharp objects
- Electrical hazards
- Injury from lifting
- Falling on wet/slippery floors
- Dealing with difficult guests
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:
The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal Precautions
- Food safe Levels 1
- Use gloves provided when necessary
- Immunization for Hepatitis B, H1N1 and vaccination against Tuberculosis
- Non-violent crisis intervention training
- Uniform will be laundered daily
- Use of rubber mats

Education, Experience, AND Qualifications:
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
- Completion of High School, Grade 12 or equivalent
- Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program for one academic year is an asset
NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
Experience and Knowledge:
The successful applicant will hold/have:
- Food Safe Level 1 (Food Safe 2 and Asset)
- First Aid Certification ( an asset)
- Fluent spoken and written English
- Valid Driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract
- Criminal Record Check
- Excellent team and interpersonal, organizational and time-management skills
- Able to handle physical demands which include lifting, pushing or pulling a minimum of 23 kg.
- Other training as required by contracts or The Salvation Army

- Online New Hire Employee Health and Safety courses
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training
- A minimum of one year of prior related experience, including institutional kitchen experience or equivalent.
The salary range is based on the Collective Agreement, not any other factors. The target hiring range for this position is $21.39
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $23.16 to $23.52 with a maximum of $23.88.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
