Why this role matters

The Salvation Army Homelessness Metro Regional Catering Team supports people experiencing homelessness by providing meal services to residential sites across Melbourne. This work is central to the Salvos’ commitment to caring for vulnerable members of the community with compassion, dignity, and respect.

The purpose of this role is to prepare and provide meals for residents in accordance with all food safety and regulatory requirements. Working alongside the Catering Services Team Leader, staff and volunteers; the Cook contributes to a supportive environment that upholds the rights, wellbeing and dignity of residents while reflecting The Salvation Army’s values in everyday practice.

About the role

We are seeking a Cook to join our Homelessness Metro Regional Catering Team, supporting the preparation and provision of meals for residential service sites at Flagstaff Accommodation (West Melbourne), The Open Door (North Melbourne), and Foley House (Footscray)

Reporting to the Catering Services Team Leader, this is a casual position, primarily located in Flagstaff Travel between sites may be required.

Conditions

Compensation is in accordance with SCAHDS LEVEL 3.1

How you will make an impact

  • Support the Catering Services Team Leader and Senior Cook in coordinating daily kitchen operations, acting as delegate when required

  • Prepare and deliver high-quality, nutritious meals for residents, ensuring consistency, presentation, and minimal wastage

  • Assist in planning rotating menus that meet dietary requirements and resident needs

  • Supervise and support kitchen staff, ensuring efficient workflows and compliance with food safety standards

  • Maintain a clean, safe kitchen environment in line with OH&S requirements, Australian Food Safety Standards, and TSA policies

  • Manage food ordering, deliveries, stock control, and accurate food safety documentation

  • Build positive working relationships and contribute to continuous improvement in service delivery

What you will bring

  • Relevant qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in commercial cookery in a high-volume setting

  • Experience working in residential, aged care, or community services food environments (preferred)

  • Strong knowledge of food safety standards, hygiene practices, and OH&S requirements

  • Proven ability to supervise and support staff in a fast-paced kitchen environment

  • Experience with menu planning, stock control, and kitchen administration processes

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively

  • A current Food Safety Certificate and willingness to obtain a national police check

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) has been providing outstanding care for Victoria's children and their families for over 147 years.

We are the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and our care extends to children from Tasmania, southern New South Wales and other states around Australia and overseas.

With a passionate, highly skilled and committed staff campus wide of over 5,000, we provide a full range of clinical services, tertiary care and health promotion and prevention programs for children and young people.

We are the designated state-wide major trauma centre for paediatrics in Victoria and a Nationally Funded Centre for cardiac and liver transplantation.
