Description

As a Cook, you will play a vital role in supporting survivors by ensuring access to nutritious meals in a safe, welcoming environment. This role combines meal planning, food preparation, compliance, and client interaction, contributing directly to the health and well-being of individuals and families in shelter.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Meal Planning & Preparation

  • Plan and prepare daily meals and snacks that meet program and client needs.
  • Develop and post weekly menus in accordance with program guidelines.
  • Ensure meals are nutritious, timely, and appropriate for diverse client needs.

Food Program Compliance & Operations

  • Ensure full compliance with Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) requirements and other regulatory standards.
  • Manage food ordering, inventory, and storage to maintain efficient kitchen operations.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to food program requirements.

Kitchen Safety & Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of kitchen and equipment.
  • Follow all health, sanitation, and safety standards to ensure a safe food environment.
  • Monitor kitchen operations to ensure efficiency and compliance with agency expectations.

Client Engagement & Education

  • Provide basic nutrition education and guidance to clients in an approachable and supportive manner.
  • Foster a welcoming and respectful environment for all individuals accessing kitchen services.

Team Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Work collaboratively with shelter staff to support overall program operations.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development (minimum 20 hours annually).
  • Maintain knowledge of food safety, nutrition standards, and program requirements.


Requirements

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience with food preparation, food service programs, or regulated food programs preferred.
  • Knowledge of CACFP, Food Buying Guide, and/or food production standards preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage kitchen operations and maintain compliance with regulations.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic math and problem-solving skills.

Special Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance required; must qualify for agency insurance coverage if transporting clients.
  • Maintain all required certifications and trainings per licensing and regulatory standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically active work including standing, walking, and lifting (frequently up to 50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds).
  • Ability to work in kitchen environments with exposure to heat, humidity, and equipment.
  • Exposure to moderate to occasionally loud noise levels and cleaning materials.
  • Ability to respond to dynamic situations within a shelter environment, including occasional exposure to bodily fluids.
