The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Role Purpose

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Controls Engineering Intern to join our dynamic engineering team. This internship offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting automated control systems for a variety of industrial applications. As an intern, you will work closely with experienced controls engineers, contributing to real-world projects while developing technical and professional skills in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, development, and testing of control systems, including PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming, HMI (Human-Machine Interface) development, and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
  • Support troubleshooting and debugging of control system hardware and software issues under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Participate in drafting and reviewing technical documentation, wiring diagrams, and system schematics.
  • Help with the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of control systems on-site as required.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, to ensure project success.
  • Conduct research on new technologies, components, and industry best practices relevant to control systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of work and assist in preparing project reports and presentations.

Education/Experience - Required

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of control systems, PLCs, and industrial automation concepts.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Function Block Diagram is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with CAD software is beneficial.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
