This position provides significant exposure to senior management, regulators and regional leadership and offers the opportunity to directly influence the Finance agenda for one of State Street's most important markets in Asia-Pacific.
Who we are looking for
The role operates under a Multiple-Hat arrangement supporting a diverse legal entity structure, including a locally licensed trust bank, branch of a U.S. bank, investment management entities and other regulated financial services businesses.
The successful candidate will serve as a key finance representative to local regulators, auditors, tax advisors and senior business management, ensuring the integrity of financial and regulatory reporting, a strong control environment and compliance with all applicable regulatory and accounting requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Legal Entity Controllership
Responsible for all aspects of Legal Entity Controllership for State Street's regulated entities in Japan.
Ensure completeness, accuracy and timeliness of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting under Japan GAAP and applicable Group reporting requirements.
Oversee day-to-day accounting operations performed by regional and global Finance support teams, including General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Intercompany, Fixed Assets and Financial Reporting processes.
Coordinate monthly close activities and ensure proper governance over journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations and financial control execution.
Ensure appropriate accounting treatment of business initiatives, new products, transactions and regulatory developments.
Act as the in-country Finance subject matter expert supporting local management and business strategy initiatives.
Regulatory Reporting
Own the production, review and submission of all regulatory returns and prudential reporting required by local regulators including:
Financial Services Agency (FSA)
Bank of Japan (BOJ)
Local Finance Bureau and other regulatory authorities as applicable
Ensure regulatory reporting is complete, accurate and submitted within prescribed timelines.
Maintain and enhance governance, controls and documentation supporting the regulatory reporting framework.
Monitor developments in local banking, trust banking and investment management regulations and assess implications on reporting requirements.
Coordinate implementation of new regulatory requirements, consultations and reporting changes.
Lead engagement with regulators during routine submissions, inspections, thematic reviews and regulatory inquiries.
Statutory Reporting and External Audit
Lead the preparation and review of annual statutory financial statements and disclosures for all Japan entities.
Manage relationships with external auditors and ensure timely completion of statutory audits.
Coordinate resolution of audit findings, management letter points and accounting issues.
Ensure compliance with all local filing requirements and statutory reporting obligations.
Governance, Risk and Controls
Maintain a robust control environment supporting accounting, regulatory reporting and statutory reporting processes.
Ensure key Finance controls are appropriately designed, documented and operating effectively.
Support legal entity governance requirements, including Board, Audit Committee, Risk Committee and other governance forums as required.
Provide management representations, control attestations, risk assessments and certifications where applicable.
Partner with Business Controls, Risk Management, Compliance and Internal Audit teams to strengthen the overall control framework.
Lead remediation efforts for Internal Audit, regulatory reviews and control findings.
Tax Oversight
Coordinate with Ernst & Young and State Street Corporate Tax teams on:
Corporate tax compliance
Consumption tax compliance
Withholding tax matters
Transfer pricing matters
Monitor changes to tax legislation and assess impact on local entities.
Support tax audits, inspections and regulatory inquiries as required.
Stakeholder Management
Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders across:
Local business leadership
Regional APAC Finance teams
Global Accounting Operations
Corporate Tax
Treasury
Regulatory Reporting teams
Risk and Compliance functions
Act as a trusted Finance adviser to local management and regional leadership.
Provide clear communication and escalation of emerging risks, regulatory changes and financial reporting matters.
Projects and Strategic Initiatives
Lead or support Finance transformation initiatives impacting Japan entities, including:
Regulatory reporting enhancements
Accounting system changes
Operating model transformation
Process standardization initiatives
New business and product implementations
Support legal entity restructurings, capital initiatives and regulatory change programs where required.
Drive automation, efficiency and control enhancement initiatives across Finance processes.
People Leadership
Lead and develop a team of Officers and Finance professionals while fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture.
Provide guidance, coaching and oversight to team members and shared service teams.
Promote a strong risk and control culture within the Finance organization.
Support business continuity and resiliency planning for Finance processes.
Education & Preferred Qualifications
University degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
Qualified Accountant (CPA, JICPA or equivalent preferred).
Approximately 10–15 years of relevant experience within Banking, Asset Management, Financial Services or Public Accounting.
Significant experience in:
Financial and regulatory reporting
Legal entity controllership
External audit management
Regulatory engagement
Internal controls and governance
Experience dealing directly with Japanese regulators, including FSA and BOJ, strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of Banking Act, Trust Banking Act and Financial Instruments and Exchange Act reporting requirements.
Experience operating within a multinational financial institution preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in both Japanese and English.
