Position Title: Controller (onsite)

Salary: $97,900-$148,200 commensurate with experience and qualifications

plus superb benefits package provided to all employees

including up to 9% 401k contributions and profit sharing program

Position Summary

Colonial Farm Credit (www.colonialfarmcredit.com) is an agricultural credit cooperative and provides loans for farms and country homes; land purchase, home construction, and improvements; buildings, machinery, livestock, and equipment; production capital for both full-time and part-time farmers; and ag-related businesses. We have approximately 75 employees and office hours are 8 AM-4:30 PM Monday through Friday.

We have an excellent employment opportunity for a Controller in our Administrative office located in Mechanicsville VA. Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, this position:

  • Ensures the Association’s accounting practices and financial reporting are accurate and compliant with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Farm Credit Administration (FCA) regulations.
  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of loan accounting, disbursements, accounts receivable, fixed asset records, and general accounting, ensuring all accounting allocations are appropriately made, documented, and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Responsible for the preparation and production of external financial reports in accordance with GAAP and FCA regulations, including required regulatory and stakeholder reporting.
  • Prepares analyses to interpret business trends, financial results, and budget variances for management decision-making and reporting purposes.
  • Assists the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in maintaining the Association’s Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICFR) framework and documentation and is directly responsible for establishing and ensuring adherence to internal controls across all accounting and financial reporting functions.
  • Coordinates and provides support for internal and external audits, regulatory examinations, and testing of key spreadsheets and financial controls.
  • Prepares the Association’s annual budget, forecasted financial statements, and supporting schedules to support strategic planning and business objectives.
  • Participates as an active member of the Asset Liability Committee (ALCO), providing financial reporting, analysis, and insight into net interest income and balance sheet trends.
  • Supervises Finance Department staff, including employees responsible for loan accounting and related processes, to ensure excellent service to internal and external customers.
  • Supports the development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures, and process improvements, including changes resulting from new accounting standards or regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Education or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and regulatory compliance
  • Demonstrated experience preparing financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and regulatory reports.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with the ability to communicate financial information effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and experience working with financial reporting and accounting systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt effectively to changing business needs.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including employee development, performance management, and coaching.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Association personnel, auditors, regulators, and external business partners.
  • Acceptable background reports, including credit, criminal, driving, and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Seven (7) or more years of progressive accounting, auditing, or financial reporting experience
  • CPA designation
  • Experience within a financial services or Farm Credit environment.
