Job Description

Controller

Location: Scottsdale / Paradise Valley, AZ
Compensation: $130,000 - $140,000 DOE
Industry: Custom Home Building & Construction

We are partnering with a well-established luxury custom home builder with 40 years of experience and a strong reputation for quality, craftsmanship, and long-term relationships. The company is continuing to grow and is looking for someone to join its finance team and help build for the future.

This is a hands-on, in-office role for someone who wants more than a narrow accounting seat. It is an opportunity to lead the accounting function in a small business, take real ownership of your domain, and help build a stronger company over time.

We are looking for someone who values working closely with a good team, wants their work to matter, and is energized by responsibility. The right person will be trusted, relied on, and expected to bring both accuracy and initiative. They will provide insight into the business's financial status, potential risks, and opportunities to improve how the business operates.

The right candidate will bring experience from construction, homebuilding, or a closely related industry, along with sound judgment, high integrity, attention to detail, and the ability to explain financial information in a clear and practical way.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the accounting function for the company and help strengthen it for the future.

  • Build and improve financial processes, reporting, and controls that support long-term growth and efficiency.

  • Lead and improve visibility into job costing, project forecasting, annual company budgeting and forecasting, budget performance, cash flow, gross margin, and profitability across the business.

  • Deliver timely financial reporting and analysis that helps the company understand performance, risks, opportunities, and trends.

  • Support decision-making around pricing, budget allocation, operational performance, and company profitability.

  • Analyze the performance of different parts of the business and help identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Help move the company from paper-heavy processes toward more modern digital systems and workflows.

  • Ensure the integrity and timely execution of core accounting functions, including general ledger activity, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, month-end close, cash management, reporting packages, and sales tax.

  • Support selected operational and administrative functions that naturally sit within a small-company accounting role, including items such as insurance coordination and related financial oversight.

  • Work closely with team members across the company to keep financial information aligned with day-to-day business realities.

  • Serve as a key point of contact for banks, CPAs, and other outside financial partners, including coordination of tax reporting, tax return preparation, and related compliance requirements.

  • Maintain financial discipline, confidentiality, internal controls, and accuracy in all work.

  • Manage and delegate effectively within a small accounting department, including oversight of one direct report and day-to-day accounting support functions.

Qualifications

The right candidate will likely bring:

  • Strong accounting and finance experience in construction, homebuilding, or a closely related industry.

  • Solid understanding of the financial realities of residential construction, with custom homebuilding experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience with job costing, project forecasting, gross margin management, cash flow oversight, profitability analysis, and budget review.

  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and applicable accounting and tax compliance requirements.

  • Ability to think globally about the company while also handling day-to-day financial work.

  • High integrity, sound judgment, and close attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly, simply, and confidently.

  • Comfort with systems, organization, and process improvement.

  • Strong proficiency with accounting systems and financial reporting tools, including advanced spreadsheet skills, with the ability to learn, improve, and administer digital accounting tools, systems, and workflows.

  • Ability to manage one direct report, delegate effectively, and keep the accounting function moving efficiently.

Education and Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience preferred.

  • Prior experience in a Controller, Senior Accountant, Construction Accountant, Accounting Manager, or similar role preferred.

  • Experience in residential construction, luxury custom homebuilding, or a comparable construction-related business strongly preferred.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is a plus.

  • CPA or other advanced accounting credentials are a plus, but not required.

Ideal Fit

This role is a good fit for someone who wants to do meaningful work in a small business, be respected for what they bring to the table, and help build something lasting. You will be expected to work hard, think critically, solve problems, and take ownership. In return, your work will matter, your voice will carry weight, and your contribution will be felt across the company.
