About the Company

Our client is a well-established electrical contractor with over 70 years of success serving the New York City metropolitan area. Generating approximately $25–30 million in annual revenue with a workforce of 150–200 union electricians, the company performs complex commercial electrical projects for Fortune 500 clients including premier general contractors and developers.

As the company continues to scale its operations, they are seeking a hands-on Controller who can strengthen the accounting function, improve processes, and partner closely with ownership to support the next phase of growth.

Reporting directly to ownership, the Controller will oversee all day-to-day accounting and financial operations while leading the company's transition toward more efficient, technology-driven financial processes. This is a highly visible leadership role that requires someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves, improving workflows, and serving as a trusted business partner to executive leadership.

The Controller will manage the accounting function while collaborating with project managers, estimators, field leadership, outside CPA firm, and ownership to ensure accurate financial reporting and operational performance.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations including:
    • General Ledger
    • Accounts Payable
    • Accounts Receivable
    • Cash Management
    • Bank Reconciliations
    • Journal Entries
    • Month-End & Year-End Close
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and management reports.
  • Manage construction accounting functions including:
    • Job Costing
    • WIP Reporting
    • Project Profitability Analysis
    • Cost Tracking
  • Partner with project managers and estimators to analyze project performance and financial results.
  • Monitor cash flow, forecasting, and company financial health.
  • Oversee union payroll reporting, compliance, insurance, and related construction documentation.
  • Coordinate annual audits and tax matters with the company's outside CPA firm.
  • Develop, document, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Lead modernization initiatives by improving accounting systems, reporting, and technology utilization.
  • Mentor and support the accounting and administrative team while fostering accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a strategic financial partner to ownership, providing meaningful insights that help drive business decisions.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, or Construction Accounting Manager experience preferred.
  • Construction, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, or specialty contractor experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Job Costing
    • WIP Reporting
    • Construction Financial Statements
    • Cash Flow Management
    • Project Profitability
  • Experience working with union contractors and construction payroll is highly desirable.
  • Experience implementing or improving accounting systems and financial processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA is a plus, but not required.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary $125,000 - $150,000
  • Annual team performance bonus
