Controller

StaffBuffalo is working with a well-established Western New York construction organization to hire a Controller, offering up to $150,000 per year plus a year-end bonus based on company performance. This is a full-time, in-office opportunity for a steady, trustworthy finance leader who can step into a highly visible role and build confidence with ownership, operations, project managers, estimators, and the accounting team.

This Controller will oversee the financial function for a multi-division construction business with year-round and seasonal operations. The role includes banking, payables, receivables, cash flow management, WIP reporting, billing oversight, job cost review, financial reporting, and partnership with operational leaders. Construction experience is strongly preferred, although candidates with strong process-driven accounting leadership from complex environments will also be considered.

The current Controller has served the organization for many years and will be available to support transition, answer questions, and help with training. The right candidate will be independent, analytical, ethical, and comfortable earning trust over time while working in a practical, friendly, business casual office environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting and finance operations, including banking, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash flow management, general ledger activity, and financial reporting.
  • Review Work in Progress reports, billing activity, job cost information, and project financials to identify issues, trends, and opportunities for improved controls.
  • Partner with project managers, estimators, division leaders, and ownership to review budgets, analyze project performance, and support informed decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, support GAAP-compliant reporting, and coordinate with outside accounting partners for quarterly and year-end review needs.
  • Lead and support accounting office resources, including collaboration with administrative team members who assist with AIA billing, AP, AR, and related information flow.
  • Manage banking relationships, ensure required financial compliance, and provide clear, honest insight into the company’s financial position.
  • Operate independently in a trusted standalone Controller capacity, prioritizing work effectively in a non-micromanaged environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Progressive accounting and finance experience, including leadership or Controller-level responsibility in a privately held, project-based, or operationally complex environment.
  • Construction accounting experience, WIP reporting, AIA billing, job costing, or ComputerEase experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of banking, AP, AR, cash flow, billing, general ledger, financial reporting, and month-end or year-end accounting processes.
  • Excellent analytical skills, sound judgment, strong ethics, and the ability to handle sensitive financial information with discretion.
  • Collaborative communication style with the ability to build trust with ownership, project managers, estimators, office staff, and outside accounting partners.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently while balancing daily financial needs with longer-term reporting and process priorities.
