Job Description

nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is a 100% employee-owned (ESOP) government contractor headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama. Since our founding in 2012, we have built a reputation for excellence in engineering, analytics, and technical services across missile defense, cybersecurity, test range modernization, and space control. We are growing steadily and deliberately, and we treat our people like family.

We are seeking a Controller to lead our Finance & Accounting department. This is a leadership role where the Controller's primary responsibility is building and running a coordinated, high-performing F&A team — setting direction, documenting processes, developing staff, identifying efficiencies with modern tooling, and ensuring the department scales with the company.

Responsibilities

Team leadership and development

  • Lead, develop, and manage a team of F&A staff covering billing, payroll, accounts payable, and general accounting across multiple legal entities
  • Establish clear ownership and accountability for each functional area within the department, eliminating single points of failure while maintaining audit-proof separation of duties
  • Build a well-documented, cross-trained team where processes are repeatable and institutional knowledge is shared
  • Identify development opportunities for each team member and invest in their growth
  • Foster a collaborative, organized, and transparent team culture aligned with nSI's broader values

Monthly close and billing operations

  • Own the monthly close calendar — a sequenced, documented process that the team executes reliably under your leadership
  • Drive billing performance across multiple monthly invoices (CPFF, T&M, and FFP contract types) and legal entities with a focus on timely submission and accuracy
  • Ensure correct and timely invoicing through Unanet: labor cost posting, direct cost entry, expense coding, WAWF submission, and contract data integrity
  • Oversee the payroll cycle in ADP with appropriate segregation of duties and on-time processing
  • Own accounts payable, month-end journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and GL period close
  • Maintain the indirect rate structure and produce the monthly Schedule of Indirect Expenses (SIE)

Cross-functional coordination

  • Partner with Program Control on contract data integrity: modifications, billing rates, CLIN ceilings, and cost data accuracy
  • Coordinate with Contracts to ensure timely modification processing, billing rate updates, and invoice compliance
  • Establish and maintain clear standards for upstream inputs that F&A depends on — timecard approvals, expense submissions, and contract data — working collaboratively with division leads and program managers
  • Serve as a constructive financial partner to the operations and program management teams

Reporting and management visibility

  • Produce a timely monthly financial reporting packages by legal entity: P&L by division, balance sheet, cash flow statements, DSO, and indirect rate tracking
  • Ensure program managers have timely, self-service access to contract cost data through Unanet and Datalake dashboards
  • Provide the VP, CEO, and executive team with clear, actionable financial insight — translating data into decisions
  • Maintain and continuously update an integrated 3-Statement Model of the corporation to forecast cashflow, EBITDA, and key financial metrics
  • Continuously evaluate departmental processes and recommend improvements to increase efficiency and scalability as the company grows

Compliance and audit readiness

  • Maintain DCAA-compliant accounting practices: timekeeping integrity, cost allowability, indirect rate documentation, and Internal Control Documents (ICDs)
  • Lead preparation for DCAA audits and coordinate with external GovCon accounting advisors as needed
  • Oversee the annual Incurred Cost Submission (ICS), whether prepared internally or with external support
  • Support the annual ESOP third-party audit and company valuation data calls

Basic qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including at least 2 years managing a team with direct reports
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and hold accountable a finance or accounting team
  • Working knowledge of government contracting finance: FAR/DFARS cost principles, DCAA compliance, indirect rate structures, and GovCon billing across CPFF, T&M, and FFP contract types
  • Strong organizational and communication skills — able to manage competing priorities, document processes clearly, and communicate financial results to non-financial audiences
  • You must be a U.S. citizen to be eligible for this position

Lacking any one of these disqualifies you from this position.

Preferred qualifications

  • CPA or equivalent certification
  • Experience with Unanet GovCon ERP — billing, cost posting, indirect rate configuration, and the monthly close workflow
  • Familiarity with ADP Workforce Now for payroll processing
  • Experience in an ESOP-owned company
