Serve as a key financial executive overseeing enterprise accounting operations across a complex academic health system. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller leads critical financial functions supporting a hospital system with over $5B in annual operations. This role ensures strong internal controls, drives financial reporting excellence, and partners with executive leadership to support systemwide financial stewardship and operational performance.
In this role, you will:
• Lead all hospital system accounting operations including General Accounting, Property Accounting, Gift Administration, Payroll, Accounts Payable, Treasury, and Financial Reporting.
• Direct and develop a large, multi level accounting leadership team while fostering accountability, performance excellence, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee the monthly close process, prepare financial statements, and deliver detailed variance and trend analysis to executive leadership and governing boards.
• Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, healthcare regulations, and internal control requirements including safeguarding of assets and proper segregation of duties.
• Coordinate and lead the annual external audit process, including preparation of financial statements and collaboration on the annual community benefit report.
• Oversee enterprise financial systems, upgrades, integrations, and technology enhancements to strengthen reporting accuracy and internal controls.
• Provide strategic financial analysis to senior leadership, including capital transaction analysis, bond due diligence coordination, debt reporting, and cash flow oversight.
• Monitor adherence to GASB fund accounting standards and restricted fund requirements, including intercompany reconciliations and treasury oversight.
• Partner with reimbursement leadership on accounts receivable and net revenue valuation matters.
• Represent the hospital system in University of California Office of the President Controller meetings and systemwide finance committees.
Salary Range:
$182,600 to $449,200 annually
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field. Master’s or advanced degree in Finance or Accounting required.
• Certified Public Accountant certification.
• 7 to 10 years of senior level accounting experience, preferably within Academic Medical Centers, Hospital Systems, or healthcare focused accounting environments.
• 5 or more years of direct management experience leading accounting teams.
• Demonstrated experience leading integrated accounting, reporting, and enterprise financial systems.
• Experience coordinating external audits and managing complex capital related transactions, debt reporting, and cash flow oversight.
• Strong knowledge of internal financial controls, regulatory compliance, and GASB fund accounting standards.
• Advanced financial reporting, variance analysis, and executive presentation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to build and lead high performing management teams while driving operational improvement.
