A Brief Overview

Supports and contributes to the controlled substance compliance and diversion management program for Avera. This role collaborates with designated teams to ensure compliance with DEA regulatory requirements, including education and adherence to established policies, procedures, and documentation standards. The Analyst participates in and helps coordinate data analysis processes related to controlled substances, contributing to the identification of trends and supporting the investigation of suspected drug diversion incidents. This position assists in implementing and monitoring components of the diversion management plan, while partnering with leadership to support oversight and direction. The Analyst engages with the Avera Regional Controlled Substance Oversight Committee and may support local Drug Diversion Investigation and Response Teams, as well as other relevant system committees. The role works collaboratively with internal leaders, regulatory agencies, and law enforcement, contributing to the evaluation and improvement of processes to ensure regulatory compliance and proactively prevent drug diversion.

What you will do

  • Supports the controlled substance diversion management program through coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of controlled substance activities across the organization.
  • Contributes to compliance with regulatory requirements (DEA, FDA, Board(s) of Pharmacy) by supporting the implementation and adherence to policies, procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Participates in data analysis related to controlled substances, identifying trends, variances, and potential areas of risk, and supports investigations of suspected drug diversion incidents.
  • Collaborates with pharmacy and organizational leadership to implement and promote standardized controlled substance best practices across all areas of practice.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of education and training related to controlled substance handling, diversion awareness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Supports the maintenance of accurate records and documentation to meet internal requirements and external accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS).
  • Utilizes medication dispensing technology (e.g., Pyxis systems) to support monitoring, auditing, and compliance activities.
  • Participates in Avera Regional Controlled Substance Oversight Committee activities and may support local Drug Diversion Investigation and Response Teams, as well as other relevant committees or workgroups.
  • Communicates effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including nursing, providers, pharmacy staff, leadership, and external partners such as regulatory agencies and law enforcement, as appropriate.
  • Performs operational support activities, including medication-related documentation, inventory processes, and reverse distributor coordination, while applying analytical and problem-solving skills to support continuous improvement and proactive diversion prevention.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified as a pharmacy technician by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Upon Hire and
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician - Board of Pharmacy In the state based on job assignment Upon Hire and
  • Controlled Substances Diversion Prevention - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) within 90 Days
  • Minimum 1 year Avera Pharmacy Technician experience or 1 year of experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician at an outside organization


Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:

  • Technical Certificate Completion of ASHP/ACPE Pharmacy Technician Education program
  • Bachelor's in healthcare, business, criminal justice, public administration, information technology or related field
