Job Opening:

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for Flood Resilience and Insurance Outreach Intern (Unpaid Contracted Student Interns) for 2026 Fall Semester to perform the duties listed below on a part-time basis.

This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Candidates may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

• The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Flood Hazard Management Program is partnering with the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to develop and update flood resilience and flood insurance outreach materials. This collaborative effort aims to streamline risk communication and build flood resiliency across the Commonwealth. Specific topics will include educating residents and businesses on understanding flood hazards, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and promoting proactive flood mitigation and preparedness strategies. Assisting with regular social media outreach, emergency preparedness communication, and community engagement resources will also be an important role for this position.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist with flood resilience outreach through the review and evaluation of current flood-related resources (e.g., infographics, website content, NFIP guides) and suggest impactful updates across agency platforms.
• Identify and develop new outreach products to educate residents, property owners, and businesses about localized flood risks, the importance of flood insurance, and emergency preparedness.
• Help manage and promote flood awareness and risk reduction strategies to the public on social media platforms by creating engaging, accessible digital content.
• Help promote state flood-mapping tools, resilience resources, and MEMA preparedness campaigns through social media and digital event planning.
• Coordinate with EEA agencies, MEMA representatives, municipal stakeholders, and external partners to ensure cohesive messaging regarding flood hazards and insurance benefits.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

• Some experience in marketing and outreach-related tools (i.e., use of various social media platforms, Canva, PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) is preferred.
• Interest in climate adaptation, flood mitigation, emergency management, or water resource protection.
• Strong communication and storytelling skills, with an ability to translate complex flood, insurance, and emergency preparedness data into clear public messaging.
