Job Description
The Consultant – Fetal Medicine is responsible for providing specialized care for high-risk pregnancies, fetal diagnosis, prenatal counseling, and fetal therapeutic interventions. The consultant works collaboratively with obstetricians, neonatologists, geneticists, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other multidisciplinary teams to optimize maternal and fetal outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Evaluate and manage high-risk pregnancies.
- Perform comprehensive fetal assessments using advanced obstetric ultrasound.
- Conduct first, second, and third trimester fetal anomaly scans.
- Assess fetal growth, Doppler studies, fetal echocardiography (where credentialed), and fetal well-being.
- Diagnose congenital anomalies and genetic disorders.
- Provide prenatal counseling to expectant parents regarding fetal abnormalities and management options.
- Develop individualized management plans for complex pregnancies.
- Perform invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures including:
- Amniocentesis
- Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
- Fetal Blood Sampling (where applicable)
- Perform or assist in fetal therapeutic procedures where appropriately credentialed.
- Manage pregnancies complicated by:
- Maternal medical disorders
- Multiple pregnancies
- Fetal growth restriction
- Pre-eclampsia
- Placental disorders
- Preterm labor
- Congenital anomalies
- Participate in labor and delivery planning for high-risk pregnancies.
- Coordinate care with Neonatology, Pediatric Surgery, Genetics, Radiology, and ICU teams.
Diagnostic Responsibilities
- Interpret advanced fetal ultrasound findings.
- Review prenatal laboratory and genetic investigations.
- Recommend appropriate prenatal screening and diagnostic tests.
- Monitor fetal growth and well-being throughout pregnancy.
- Maintain accurate documentation of ultrasound findings and management plans.
Patient Care
- Deliver evidence-based maternal-fetal care.
- Explain risks, benefits, and treatment options to patients and families.
- Obtain informed consent for invasive procedures.
- Provide compassionate counseling for fetal anomalies and pregnancy complications.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and ethical medical practice.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate electronic medical records.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings.
- Contribute to departmental quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with DHA/DOH/MOHAP regulations and hospital policies.
- Participate in clinical audits and morbidity & mortality meetings.
Academic Responsibilities
- Teach and supervise residents, fellows, and medical students.
- Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME/CPD).
- Engage in clinical research and publications.
- Present at departmental meetings and conferences.
Quality & Safety
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards.
- Participate in patient safety and risk management programs.
- Ensure compliance with clinical governance standards.
Qualifications
Education
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
- MD/MS/DNB in Obstetrics & Gynecology or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Fellowship/Subspecialty Certification in Fetal Medicine or Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
- Specialist/Consultant qualification recognized by DHA, DOH, or MOHAP.
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of post-qualification experience as a Consultant in Fetal Medicine (requirements may vary by employer and licensing authority).
- Extensive experience in managing high-risk obstetric patients.
- Demonstrated expertise in advanced fetal ultrasound and invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
Licensing
- Eligibility for or a valid:
- DHA License (Dubai)
- DOH License (Abu Dhabi)
- MOHAP License (Northern Emirates)
- Compliance with UAE Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR).
