Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
As the Construction Safety Specialist, you will play a critical role in supporting the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) for the Toro Aluminum Group of Companies and our sub-contracted installation crews.
REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
• The incumbent is required to possess a reliable vehicle and hold a valid Class G driver’s license.
• The role is primarily outdoors on construction sites at various stages of development, in all seasons and weather conditions.
• Physical demands include but are not limited to: ascending and descending stairs, climbing ladders, navigating uneven terrain, and working in adverse weather conditions.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES
Health and Safety
• Lead and support the implementation of Toro’s Occupational Health and Safety Management (OHSM) program and drive continuous improvement to achieve safety excellence. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, environmental management, safety risk assessment, contractor safety, and fostering a strong safety culture.
Technical/Function
• Conduct site visits with subcontractors and site staff, completing comprehensive site safety inspections and reports. Identify potential hazards related to installation processes and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
• Conduct incident investigations, determine root causes, and recommend and implement corrective actions. Prepare and maintain investigation reports.
• Follow up on site concerns and third-party inspection reports, ensuring compliance with subcontractor safe work practices and administrative procedures.
• Draft site-specific Safe Work Procedures for review and approval.
• Keep management informed of significant safety issues and provide recommendations as needed.
• Monitor and manage subcontractor safety documentation, distributing to clients on site as required.
• Research, develop, and recommend updates to site safety documentation to reflect best practices.
• Deliver site-specific safety training initiatives for full-time employees and subcontractors.
• Ensure all personnel comply with site safety regulations and client safety requirements.
• Maintain and update safety records, including WSIB clearance certificates, training records, and safe work procedures.
• Maintain safety data spreadsheets and management reports, providing actionable insights.
• Recommend the procurement of equipment and safety products for site use where applicable.
• Collaborate with other departments within Toro Group to support safety objectives.
• Participate in and facilitate site safety meetings for employees and subcontractors.

Internal/External Customer Service
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with Toro internal departments, external vendors, regulatory agencies, and Toro Aluminum stakeholders.
• Proactively identify and address safety and operational issues, ensuring the needs of internal and external customers are met efficiently.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Post-Secondary Degree/ Diploma/ Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
• Worker Awareness, WHMIS, Working at Heights

EXPERIENCE
• 5 years of relevant experience in the Health and Safety profession.
• Technical knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and O.Reg.213/91 Construction Projects.
• 2+ years of experience working in the construction industry, preferably in High-Rise.

SKILLS
• Proficient in computer applications, including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Teams, OneDrive, and Office 365, with the ability to create reports, presentations, and safety documentation.
• Demonstrates leadership by fostering a positive safety culture, while applying strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey safety expectations clearly.
• Strong analytical and organizational abilities, capable of identifying risks, implementing preventive measures, and managing multiple priorities effectively.
• Energetic and self-motivated, promoting health and safety in a practical, engaging, and positive manner.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build and maintain strong professional relationships across all levels of the organization.
• Experienced in training and mentoring staff and subcontractors, ensuring adherence to safety policies and procedures.
• Knowledgeable of occupational health and safety legislation, standards, and best practices, with the ability to translate them into actionable site practices.
• Detail-oriented with strong reporting skills, capable of preparing safety reports, dashboards, and performance metrics for management review.
• Collaborative team player, able to work across departments to support organizational goals and continuous improvement initiatives.
