Performs specialized tasks required to perform pipe laying, pipe repairs, valve repair/replacement of various sizes and materials of water and other pipelines.

Salary: $67,131.82 - $96,436.98 Annually $1,291.00 - $1,854.56 Weekly
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs manual tasks requiring specialized skill and knowledge in connection with construction of new water mains, repairs to existing water mains and replacement of existing valves on water mains in sizes ranging from 6" to 72".
  • Shores and braces excavations and keeps them safe.
  • Operates variety of gasoline-powered, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment including, but not limited to, pipe saws, pavement breakers, compressors, pumps, automatic gate turners and other pertinent equipment used in pipeline repairs and maintenance.
  • Uses various hand tools properly, required in pipeline repair and maintenance.
  • Operates automotive trucks, including but not limited to, 6-wheel dump, 10-wheel dump, utility crew cab and pick-up truck.
  • Works as a member of a multi-person crew.
  • Must be available for emergency overtime.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • A high school education or equivalent; and
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the methods and practices involved in carrying out maintenance and construction work on the water system; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • A valid Class B Commercial Drivers License.
  • Water Operations or Water Distribution Grade I License.
  • This position has been designated as essential in instances where the MWRA Executive Director requires essential personnel to report to work such as inclement weather or other emergencies.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to read and understand Waterworks' water system detail records.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MWRA Safety Policies, including having passed Confined Space Entry training.
  • Ability to execute written and oral orders from a person of higher authority.
  • Ability to work under all climatic conditions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Basic reading, writing, mathematical and oral communication skills.

Tools and Equipment Used

Office equipment as normally associated with the use of telephone, personal computer including word processing and other software, copy and fax machine.

While performing the duties of this job, the employees frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud in field settings, and moderately quiet in office settings.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Performs specialized tasks required to perform pipe laying, pipe repairs, valve repair/replacement of various sizes and materials of water and other pipelines.
Works under the general supervision of the Sr WDS Foreman.
