Job Description

Construction Maintenance Technician

The Utilities' Water Construction, Maintenance, and Restoration team at Colorado Springs Utilities is hiring (2) Construction Maintenance Technicians who will be responsible for performing a wide variety of semi-skilled activities in the support of construction, maintenance, and restoration of landscapes and irrigation systems. Projects will be completed throughout Colorado Springs Utilities' facilities and the community. You will be expected to implement job plans, direct and accomplish daily work assignments, estimate and acquire job materials and manpower, as well as meet with customers and uphold safety standards.

The starting pay for this position is $29.84/hour, followed by an increase to $31.34/hour after completing the probationary period. (Typically 6 months)

What you'll be doing:

  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled activities to support construction projects of departmental workgroups
  • Perform grounds-keeping maintenance activities such as mowing, trimming, pruning, cleaning, etc.
  • Operate commercial vehicles and heavy equipment such as backhoes, skid-loads, street sweepers, tandem axle trucks, trailers, snow removal, etc.
  • Operate construction-grade tools and equipment such as trenchers, compactors, saws, forklifts, seeders, mowers, wood chippers, etc.
  • Oversee temporary or seasonal employees
  • Review blueprints, technical drawings, and perform job layouts
  • Maintain, install, and repair hardscape, irrigation, plants, trees, turf, native grasses, shrubs, and landscaping at multiple facilities
  • Initiate the locates and materials necessary to complete a given job
  • Conduct inspections of vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain and update records
  • Support Colorado Springs Utilities' safety and health program to promote an incident and injury-free workplace

Who You Are: Most individuals in this job would have achieved a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) and have experience performing semi-skilled construction and/or landscaping duties. Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred, and the ability to obtain and maintain within one year of hire is required; we will provide the training/certification for your CDL. Any candidate with a background in construction, construction maintenance, and/or landscaping would be highly desired.

*A valid non-restricted driver’s license is required

*Ability to be permitted and maintain access to military installations is required

*This position requires flexibility to be able to work occasional nights and weekends

*An emergency call-out will be a required aspect of this position, and you must be able to work extended periods of time to provide operational readiness and support of our infrastructure and services

*This position is considered Essential Personnel. As such, this position is not eligible for remote or teleworking; therefore, you will be required to report during emergencies and inclement weather

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exerts in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements exceed those for Heavy Work.
  • Positions in this class typically require exposure to all weather conditions.
