Job Description

Build your career with one of WA’s leading Construction teams.

If you are an experienced construction lawyer looking for your next career move, this is an opportunity to join one of Western Australia’s largest Construction teams.

At Jackson McDonald, you’ll work on sophisticated, high-value projects for some of the state’s leading organisations, advising principals, contractors, consultants and government bodies across the full construction and infrastructure landscape.

A role with genuine career potential

We are looking for a front-end construction lawyer with a minimum of 4 years’ post-admission experience to join our team. Your primary focus will be on drafting and negotiating construction contracts, advising on procurement strategies and providing commercially focused advice to clients. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your contentious construction experience, including working on disputes and adjudications.

You’ll work closely with our highly regarded Partner, Isla McRobbie, gaining exposure to complex and interesting matters while developing your profile in the WA construction market.

This is more than a technical legal role. We’re looking for someone who wants to build strong client relationships, contribute to the growth of the practice and pave a clear pathway towards a senior role within the firm.

This role offers exposure to a diverse range of projects and clients, and the opportunity to collaborate with practitioners from Jackson McDonald’s WHS, insurance and commercial teams. Additionally, our Construction team has strong connections across the industry, including with the Master Builders Association, Civil Contractors Federation, mining and resources sector, SOCLA and Consult Australia.

You can expect a supportive, collaborative team environment where your contribution is valued and there is genuine scope to shape your career.

About you

We’re looking for a lawyer who combines strong construction law experience with commercial judgment, curiosity and a genuine interest in working with clients.

You will have:

  • A minimum of 4 years’ post-admission experience, with a strong commercial law background.
  • Proven experience in front-end construction law, including drafting and negotiating construction contracts.
  • Some experience in contentious construction matters, including disputes and/or adjudications.
  • Excellent legal knowledge, technical ability and attention to detail.
  • A sound understanding of the legal and commercial issues affecting construction and engineering projects in Western Australia.
  • Strong commercial acumen and sound judgment.
  • Confidence in dealing directly with clients and stakeholders.
  • Good IT skills and the ability to work effectively with modern legal technology.

Just as importantly, you’ll be someone who:

  • Is motivated to contribute to the continued growth and success of the team.
  • Thrives in a sophisticated, fast-paced professional environment.
  • Has a strong work ethic and takes pride in delivering high-quality work.
  • Is commercially minded and genuinely client focused.
  • Enjoys building relationships and contributing to business development.
  • Is proactive, collaborative and takes ownership of matters from start to finish.
  • Is ambitious about building a long-term career in private practice.

Why Jackson McDonald?

You’ll work on interesting, challenging and high-profile matters alongside experienced practitioners, with the support and flexibility to develop your skills and pursue your career ambitions.

We also believe that a great workplace extends beyond the work itself. Our people have opportunities to participate in social, community and charity initiatives, helping support the WA community while getting to know colleagues across the firm.

What we can offer you

  • A respectful and diverse workplace culture.
  • Personal development plans supported with in-house CPD seminars, e-Learning and many other opportunities.
  • Diverse work and the opportunity to collaborate with practitioners across our practice groups.
  • Flexible working arrangements.
  • Reward and recognition program.
  • Leave benefits including paid parental leave and additional paid birthday leave.
  • Committee and leadership opportunities e.g. Reconciliation Action Plan, Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Other workplace benefits such as relaxed and inclusive social events, free onsite gym and gym classes, weekly breakfasts and end-of-week drinks.
