TxDOT's Austin District is looking for one Construction Inspector II, III, or IV based in Bastrop, TX at the Bastrop Area Office This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, project management, routine and contract maintenance inspection, material field testing and documentation, bridge inspection and record keeping, and assisting the public during emergency situations. Salary Plan/Grade:

• Construction Inspector II B19 ($48,244 - $76,028/yearly)

This position inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform material tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for a Construction Inspector II, III, IV include:

• Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
• Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
• Drives/travels to geographically separated fabrication plants/project sites to monitors program status; perform unannounced inspection of operations, and problem resolution.
• Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Additional essential duties for a Construction Inspector III or IV include:

• Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.
• Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.

Additional essential duties for a Construction Inspector IV include:

• Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
• Conducts project reviews and coordinates inspections with various inspectors and other district/division project managers.
• Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans and ensures adherence to approved safety standards.
• Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience

Construction Inspector II: 1 YEAR of experience in construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Construction Inspector III: 2 YEARS construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.

Construction Inspector IV: 3 YEARS construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
• Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
• Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
• Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
