Position Information

Join our team in the Kaufman/Rockwall Area Office, where we deliver a wide range of roadway projects—from ADA sidewalk improvements to urban freeway expansions. Our construction inspectors play a vital role, working alongside engineers and contractors to review construction procedures, ensure specifications are followed, and perform testing on materials across various areas such as bridges, roadways, and environmental compliance. This role offers a dynamic, hands-on environment where no two days are the same, and our team works collaboratively with contractors to problem-solve in the field and keep critical infrastructure projects moving forward for the traveling public.

Construction Inspector IB18: $45,521.00 - $71,055.00 /yearConstruction Inspector IIB19: $48,244.00 - $76,028.00 /yearConstruction Inspector IIIB20: $51,158.00 - $81,351.00 /year

This position is for a Construction Inspector I, II, or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

Construction Inspector I or II

  • Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
  • Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
  • Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensures material tests are performed and materials meet required standards.
  • Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Construction Inspector III

  • All duties of Construction Inspector I or II
  • Manages multiple assignments
  • Review daily work reports created by other inspectors.
  • Develop solutions to construction issues with construction manager and or engineers.
  • Involved in training team members on inspection methods.
  • Able to address public concerns.
  • Review project schedules
  • Develop and prepare change orders for revisions/modifications to the plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Construction Inspector I, II, III: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Construction Inspector I: No experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Construction Inspector II: *1 YEAR construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Construction Inspector III: *2 YEARS construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies:

Knowledge of applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements

Construction engineering policies and procedures

Construction Inspector II or III

  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Instructing others
  • Shows initiative and action beyond what is required to improve products or services; is self-starting and completes assignments independently without constant supervision

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Work hours may vary due to contractor schedule.
  • Night work and weekend work will be required.
