Collins has an opening for a Construction Engineer in our Chicago, Illinois office. This position will provide the opportunity for growth, where continuing development and participation in professional societies will be encouraged and supported. The responsibilities of the Construction Engineer are to perform inspection of construction activities to document conformance to plans and specifications, sample/test materials, document contract quantities, manage other inspection staff, and ensure high-quality construction for transportation projects.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for monitoring contractor conformance to quality, performance, and specifications for assigned construction activities.
  • Proactively interacts with the contractor and communicates decisions to the Resident Engineer.
  • Provide technical expertise to Resident Engineer and/or client to ensure the project complies with all engineering standards, codes, specifications and design instructions.
  • Review, analyze, and resolves issues.
  • Perform complex engineering computations involving conventional engineering practices.
  • Prepare complete engineering plans or reports.
  • Review contractor schedules (Primavera and Gantt chart).
  • Develop, documents, and implements contract modifications.
  • Is active in technical societies.
  • Develop engineering papers and presentations.
  • Assist in coordinating project submittals, cost control, scheduling, reporting and document control activities.
  • Develop and tracks project activities relating to cost, specifications, changes and schedule.
  • Plan, schedules, conducts, and/or coordinates detailed phases of assigned project work.
  • Regularly communicates with clients.
  • Is available to attend meetings or events outside of normal working hours.
  • Perform and monitor daily field inspections and maintains inspection records.
  • Actively observes and acts in an appropriate manner related to safety.

Qualifications

Education and/or

Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or construction management from an accredited four-year university and 2-5 years of experience.
  • Extensive use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and construction management databases/tracking software is required for this role.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) is required, Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred.
  • Ability to obtain certifications for material sampling/testing for aggregates, concrete, asphalt, grading, etc.
  • Ability to obtain certifications for inspection of roadways, bridges, coatings, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license without restrictions.
