Construction CQA Field Inspector

Stantec’s Construction Support Services (CSS) Program is growing, with project needs in the Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia areas for multiple top tier clients. Stantec’s on-site services are performed by one or multiple inspectors and/or engineers responsible for monitoring construction activities to verify that construction is performed per the design and in accordance with the contract documents. A multi-discipline team of engineers and other professionals provide office support to the on-site team as required.

Your Opportunity

Stantec is providing Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) and construction support services for a large-scale, multi-discipline heavy civil construction project in Memphis, Tennessee, involving significant earthwork, mass grading, and associated civil construction activities. To support the project, Stantec is seeking a full-time Construction CQA Field Inspector for a dedicated on-site assignment. Your Key Responsibilities

May include, but are not limited to, the abilities to:

  • Serve as Stantec’s on-site safety representative, with ability to maintain a safe working environment for themselves and others by participating in daily safety briefings, observations, and walkdowns prior to executing the work or when conditions change.
  • Serve as the liaison between the engineer of record, Client, and Contractor for day-to-day field activities.
  • Interact routinely, effectively, and professionally with Client and Contractor representatives and the Stantec office team.
  • Monitor and document construction activities – with particular emphasis on earthwork, mass grading, and associated civil construction operations – to verify conformance with design documents and contract requirements.
  • Oversee and/or perform required testing (soil, concrete, asphalt, geosynthetics, etc.) and maintain required documentation in accordance with the approved quality management and design documents.
  • Track construction progress, observed issues and resolutions, field discussions, and other site activities.
  • Review and respond to daily construction issues, working with the design team, Client, and contractor(s) as appropriate to determine a resolution.
  • Monitor adherence to contract and design documents.
  • Communicate and report discrepancies and deviations from requirements to the design team and Client.
  • Maintain detailed documentation (daily reports, test results, RFIs, submittals, non-conformance reports, etc.) for inclusion in certification reports and record drawings.
  • Attend daily/weekly/monthly project field meetings.
  • Assist with development and completion of various construction progress/certification reports and record drawings.
  • Ability to work weekends as required by project schedule and construction activities.
  • This position is primarily a dedicated on-site assignment in Memphis, TN; occasional regional travel may be required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Working understanding of policies and procedures for Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) protection, including client-specific training (as required).
  • Experience with field construction activities and construction quality management is required; experience with construction materials laboratory testing is a plus.
  • Ability to use detailed plans for construction, technical specifications, quality management plans, and other project documents.
  • Construction observation and inspection experience.
  • Familiarity with materials testing requirements and construction tolerances.
  • Previous construction experience with relevant experience in the following general areas is preferred, but is not a prerequisite:
    • Heavy earthwork, mass grading, and associated conformance testing (including field and laboratory testing)
    • Cast-in-place and pre-cast concrete structures
    • Fusion welded HDPE pipe and concrete structure installation for storm and leachate systems
    • Pump stations and force mains
    • Below grade utility piping (water, storm sewer, sanitary, leachate, etc.)
    • Geosynthetic liner systems (flexible membrane liners, geosynthetic clay liners, geotextiles, geocomposites, geogrids)
  • A valid driver’s license and good driving record are required.
  • A pre-employment drug screen may also be required.
  • Client specific background checks and drug screening may also be required.
  • Proficient with desktop office software applications (word processor, spreadsheets, email, PDF viewers, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of codes and design requirements is a plus.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate’s degree, technical degree, or some college coursework in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years related experience preferred.
