Purpose of Job

The purpose of this role is to lead and manage all activities within the Condition monitoring team to maintain and execute a Predictive and Proactive maintenance program in line with the Engineering strategy for the Mine or Plant to determine the health status of machinery/equipment and to identify deviations and implement corrective actions.

Provide technical expertise and competency supporting the Engineering strategy to ensure best practices, continuous improvement, integrity, reliability of Machinery equipment at the lowest life cycle cost.

Key Accountabilities

  • Establish a Predictive Maintenance Program to assess machinery/equipment's condition and identify deviations. Consolidate programmes of the various sites and ensure compliance.
  • Manage all the applicable Sasol Mining Condition Monitoring technique programmes (Vibration Analysis, Oil Analysis, Thermography, Ultrasound), across the complex in terms of adherence and standards setting. Instrumental in driving the Total Fluid Management (TFM) process.
  • Manage condition monitoring projects to ensure effectiveness of the Condition monitoring department. Positively influence the Condition Monitoring Workgroup and drive Standardisation committee engagement sessions to ensure standardisation across the complex in terms of processes, techniques applied, instruments utilised, database set-ups and reporting.
  • Involvement in the sub-assembly management process. Assist relevant role-players with root cause failure information and analysis to determine failure modes and t prevent future failures.
  • Manage Condition Monitoring Specialists and Operators. Facilitate training on all Condition Monitoring techniques for maintenance personnel. Manage the standardisation of a data-based setup and equipment standards by ensuring a uniform quality control system.
  • Engage with Engineering personnel to discuss deviations and ensure implementation of corrective actions and best practices, involvement in the Defect elimination process. Ensure proper governance, compliance and risk management through defined discipline specific standards and best practices.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with Engineers to enable full visibility on improvement opportunities. Coach and guide Engineers, setting competence criteria for Condition Monitoring, aligned with Central governance.
  • Implement solutions based on cost effective principles.
  • Ensure safe working practices to prevent injury or incidents by following SOP's. Apply evidence based SHE practices in alignment with set standards for safe operations.
  • Enable continuous improvement and knowledge transfer through strategically influencing direction and keeping up to date with technical developments in area. Assess technical work of peers and consultants, conduct frequent audits, and ensure loop closure on deviations. Use expert knowledge, attention to detail and team dynamics to solve complex technical problems.
  • Establish a network of internal and external experts to engage, discuss to provide input and make decisions pertaining to the Condition Monitoring strategies. Provide consultation to individuals and project teams on matters in his/her area of expertise and sharing expert knowledge in own team and at all other levels.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships and contracts by building effective working relationships with Managers, Peers, Team members, Customers and Suppliers.

Formal Education

  • National Diploma / B-Tech degree / Bachelor’s degree

Or

  • National Senior Certificate / N3 with Mathematics, Science and English;
  • Qualified Artisan Trade Test (Electronic Mechanic)

Certification & Professional Membership

  • Vibration Analysis certificate
  • Oil Analysis certificate
  • Thermography / Ultrasound / Motor Circuit Analysis – MCA certification (Wish)

Knowledge and Experience

  • Technical knowledge on Hydraulic, Electrical and Mechanical equipment
  • Sound knowledge of Maintenance principles, Defect Elimination (DE) and the Work Management Process (WMP)
