Position Summary
The Concrete Paving Superintendent is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and overseeing all machine paving operations on heavy civil, highway, airport, and commercial concrete paving projects. This position provides overall leadership for field operations, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contract specifications.
The Superintendent manages multiple paving crews, foremen, subcontractors, equipment resources, and project schedules while serving as the primary field representative between project management, owners, engineers, inspectors, and field personnel. The position requires extensive knowledge of slipform paving operations, grade control technology, concrete production, quality standards, and high-production paving methods.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Leadership & Oversight
- Provide overall leadership for all concrete paving operations.
- Plan and coordinate project activities to achieve schedule and production objectives.
- Direct Foremen, Operators, and Field Crews to ensure efficient project execution.
- Establish daily, weekly, and long-range production goals.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors.
- Monitor project performance and implement corrective actions as necessary.
- Maintain strong communication with Project Managers and Executive Leadership.
Machine Paving Operations
- Oversee slipform paving, curb and gutter paving, barrier wall construction, and related concrete paving activities.
- Coordinate the setup and operation of pavers, trimmers, placer/spreaders, texture cure machines, and support equipment.
- Monitor paving production rates and identify opportunities for increased efficiency.
- Ensure proper utilization of stringline, GPS machine control, total station systems, and automated grade control technologies.
- Develop and implement sequence plans to maximize paving production.
- Resolve operational challenges that impact paving progress.
Production Planning & Scheduling
- Develop detailed production schedules and work plans.
- Coordinate concrete supply, trucking logistics, equipment availability, and workforce requirements.
- Ensure resources are properly allocated to maintain production targets.
- Monitor production quantities, cycle times, and crew efficiency.
- Identify potential project delays and implement recovery plans.
- Coordinate work activities with owners, engineers, utility companies, surveyors, and subcontractors.
Quality Control & Assurance
- Ensure all paving operations are performed according to project plans and specifications.
- Verify grades, thickness requirements, joint spacing, alignment, cross slopes, and ride quality standards.
- Oversee testing activities including slump, air content, density, and strength testing requirements.
- Coordinate with quality control personnel and project engineers.
- Review deficiencies and implement corrective measures.
- Maintain quality documentation and inspection records.
Safety Leadership
- Lead and promote a culture of safety throughout all project operations.
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA standards.
- Conduct regular jobsite safety audits and field inspections.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and property damage events.
- Develop corrective actions and ensure compliance with safety requirements.
- Mentor Foremen and field personnel on safe work practices.
Financial & Cost Management
- Monitor labor productivity and equipment utilization.
- Assist Project Management with cost forecasting and budget control.
- Review daily production reports and track quantities.
- Identify productivity issues and implement improvement strategies.
- Manage job site resources to minimize waste and unnecessary costs.
- Support change order documentation and field quantity verification.
Customer & Stakeholder Relations
- Serve as the primary field contact for owners, engineers, inspectors, and subcontractors.
- Participate in project meetings and progress reviews.
- Maintain positive working relationships with all project stakeholders.
- Resolve field issues professionally and efficiently.
- Always Represent Capital Paving & Construction in a professional manner.
Documentation & Reporting
- Review daily reports, quantity reports, equipment utilization reports, and safety documentation.
- Track project milestones, production rates, costs, and schedule performance.
- Maintain accurate records of field operations and project activities.
- Communicate progress, challenges, and resource needs to Project Management.
QualificationsExperience
- Minimum 10+ years of concrete paving experience.
- Experience managing large-scale highway, airport, bridge, industrial, or commercial paving projects.
- Extensive experience with slipform paving systems and machine paving operations.
- Proven ability to manage multiple crews and high-production paving projects.
Knowledge & Skills
- Advanced understanding of concrete paving methods, specifications, and quality standards.
- Strong knowledge of paving equipment operations and maintenance requirements.
- Experience with GPS machine control, robotic total stations, and stringless paving technology.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, profiles, grades, and specifications.
- Strong leadership, organizational, scheduling, and communication skills.
- Proficient in production planning and resource management.
Safety Qualifications
- Thorough understanding of OSHA construction standards.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and risk management.
- OSHA 30 Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and active construction environments.
- Ability to travel between project locations as required.
- Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain and active jobsites.
- Ability to work extended hours to meet project schedules.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Driver's License required.
- OSHA 30 preferred.
- CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
- Heavy Highway, DOT, FAA, or other infrastructure-related certifications are a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Wirtgen, Gomaco, Guntert & Zimmerman (G&Z), Power Curber, or similar paving equipment.
- Experience in DOT, FAA, municipal, and design-build projects.
- Knowledge of paving smoothness specifications, incentive/disincentive programs, and ride quality standards.
- Experience administering prevailing wages, certified payroll, and public infrastructure projects.
- Proven success delivering high-production concrete paving projects on schedule and within budget.
