Position Summary

The Concrete Paving Foreman is responsible for supervising and directing daily concrete paving operations on roadway, airport, heavy civil, and site development projects. This position leads concrete paving crews, coordinates paving equipment operations, ensures quality and grade compliance, and maintains safe, productive jobsite performance. The Foreman serves as the primary field leader for machine paving activities including slipform paving, curb and gutter paving, concrete placement, finishing, grade control, and production management.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Crew Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead and supervise concrete paving crew members, operators, finishers, laborers, and carpenters.
  • Assign daily work activities and ensure crews understand production goals.
  • Train and mentor employees on paving procedures, safety requirements, and equipment operations.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and professional conduct on the jobsite.
  • Conduct daily pre-task planning and safety meetings.

Concrete Paving Operations

  • Coordinate daily operation of slipform pavers, curb machines, trimmers, placer/spreaders, texture-cure machines, and supporting equipment.
  • Monitor paving alignment, cross-slope, thickness, joint spacing, and ride quality.
  • Ensure proper setup and operation of stringline, GPS machine control, and grade control systems.
  • Coordinate concrete deliveries with batch plants and trucking operations.
  • Oversee concrete placement, consolidation, finishing, curing, and protection activities.
  • Maintain paving production schedules while minimizing downtime and delays.
  • Identify and resolve field issues impacting production or quality.

Quality Control

  • Verify grades, elevations, and paving tolerances meet project specifications.
  • Coordinate with survey crews, quality control personnel, and project management.
  • Monitor concrete consistency, slump, air content, temperature, and placement methods.
  • Review plans, specifications, and paving schedules to ensure compliance.
  • Correct deficiencies and implement quality improvements as necessary.

Safety Management

  • Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Ensure all crew members wear required PPE and follow safe work practices.
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and job site hazard assessments.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Promote a culture of safety and accountability.

Equipment & Material Coordination

  • Coordinate utilization of paving equipment and support machinery.
  • Monitor equipment performance and communicate maintenance needs.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, lubrication, and inspection of paving equipment.
  • Track material quantities and productivity rates.
  • Minimize waste and maximize operational efficiency.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete daily production reports and field documentation.
  • Track labor, equipment hours, concrete quantities, and production rates.
  • Record delays, weather impacts, quality issues, and completed work.
  • Communicate project status, resource needs, and challenges to project management.

QualificationsExperience

  • Minimum 5 + years of concrete paving experience.
  • Experience with roadway, airport, bridge, commercial, or heavy civil concrete paving projects preferred.
  • Experience operating or coordinating slipform paving equipment is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with GPS machine control and grade systems preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Thorough understanding of concrete paving methods and specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, grades, profiles, and construction plans.
  • Knowledge of paving production processes, equipment setup, and quality requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in fast-paced field environments.
  • Proficient in scheduling crews, equipment, and production activities.

Safety Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of OSHA construction standards.
  • Demonstrated commitment to job site safety.
  • OSHA 10 Certification required; OSHA 30 preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk uneven terrain and active construction sites.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work extended hours as project schedules require.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • OSHA 10 Certification required.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
  • IMI, Gomaco, Wirtgen, or similar paving equipment training is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Wirtgen, Gomaco, Guntert & Zimmerman (G&Z), or similar paving equipment.
  • Knowledge of stringless paving technology and GPS systems.
  • Heavy highway, DOT, airport, or large-scale paving project experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple crews and high-production paving operations.

Reports To: Concrete Superintendent / Project Superintendent

Supervises: Concrete Paving Crew, Operators, Finishers, Laborers, and Subcontractors as assigned.
