Position Summary
The Concrete Finisher is responsible for placing, finishing, repairing, and restoring concrete surfaces on heavy civil, roadway, bridge, paving, and site development projects. This position works closely with Foremen, Superintendents, and crew members to ensure concrete work meets project specifications, quality standards, and production schedules while maintaining a safe work environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Concrete Placement & Finishing
- Place, spread, level, and finish concrete using hand and power tools.
- Operate screeds, bull floats, power trowels, vibrators, and other finishing equipment.
- Perform edging, jointing, broom finishes, trowel finishes, and specialty concrete finishes.
- Monitor concrete consistency and workability during placement operations.
- Ensure proper curing methods are applied to finished concrete.
Formwork & Preparation
- Assist with setting, aligning, and dismantling forms.
- Verify grades, elevations, slopes, and dimensions before concrete placement.
- Assist with reinforcing steel installation and embed placement as needed.
- Prepare subgrade and forms for concrete placement operations.
Quality Control
- Ensure finished concrete meets project specifications and quality standards.
- Identify and correct surface defects, inconsistencies, and finishing issues.
- Maintain proper elevations, cross slopes, and surface tolerances.
- Assist with quality inspections and testing activities.
Safety
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
- Participate in daily safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify and report unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Equipment & Tool Maintenance
- Inspect and maintain hand tools and finishing equipment.
- Clean tools and jobsite equipment following concrete placement.
- Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
- Assist with loading, unloading, and securing tools and materials.
Team Support
- Work collaboratively with laborers, operators, carpenters, and supervisors.
- Assist with concrete pours of varying sizes and complexity.
- Support production goals while maintaining quality workmanship.
- Perform other construction duties as assigned.
QualificationsREQUIREMENTS
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of concrete finishing experience preferred.
- Experience in roadway, paving, bridge, commercial, or heavy civil construction preferred.
- Ability to perform a variety of concrete finishing techniques.
- Experience working around heavy equipment and active construction sites.
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of concrete placement, finishing, curing, and repair methods.
- Ability to read grade stakes, string lines, and construction layout information.
- Familiarity with hand tools and power finishing equipment.
- Ability to recognize and correct finishing defects.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, squat, and climb throughout the workday.
- Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
Safety Qualifications
- Understanding of basic construction safety practices.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
- OSHA 10 certification preferred.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid driver's license preferred.
- OSHA 10 certification preferred.
- CPR/First Aid certification is a plus.
