Job Description

Purpose of the Position:

The Computer Scientist III, Step 4, will support the Office of Data Science and Informatics (ODSI) within the Earth Systems Science Center at UAH. This role focuses on advancing data science, informatics, and IT capabilities to support NASA Earth science data management, access, and dissemination.

This role is suited for candidates with a strong technical foundation and an interest in applying data science and informatics to large-scale Earth science challenges.

ODSI evaluates trends across data science and informatics communities to inform strategic direction and develop effective, scalable solutions. The office also provides a user-centered perspective on how Earth science data are represented, communicated, and utilized. The position contributes to cross-disciplinary collaboration aimed at improving all phases of the Earth science data lifecycle, including policy, engineering, workflows, and information delivery.

Duties / Responsibilities:

• Conduct requirements gathering to define system and project needs.
• Develop and implement software solutions aligned with project objectives.
• Perform integration testing to ensure system reliability and interoperability.
• Evaluate and optimize solutions for performance, scalability, and usability.
• Design and implement active learning frameworks for data-driven projects.

Minimum Requirements:

• Master’s degree in GIS, Remote Sensing, Engineering, or a related field; or
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline with relevant full-time experience; or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
• Minimum of 3.5 years of verifiable full-time work experience.
• Demonstrated experience in software development, including requirements analysis and implementation.
• Strong background in web application development, particularly integration testing and solution evaluation.
• Proficiency in Python and C programming.
• Experience working with machine learning techniques on large-scale datasets.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively in team environments.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience authoring peer-reviewed publications.
• Proposal development and grant writing experience.
