Job Description

The Computer Report Technician is responsible for producing technical drawings and reviewing inspection data submitted by Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technicians. This position prepares accurate, detailed reports documenting inspection results, measurements, defects, and other findings.
The role combines advanced CAD and piping-design capabilities with mechanical-integrity data management and technical reporting. Its primary focus is documentation, data interpretation, regulatory compliance, and communication of inspection findings—not the physical performance of NDT examinations.

Major Responsibilities and Activities

  • Review inspection data and field documentation provided by NDT technicians, including results from Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), and other applicable methods.
  • Prepare detailed technical inspection reports for clients, engineers, project managers, and regulatory bodies.
  • Document inspection findings, defects, measurements, test results, and recommended follow-up activities accurately and clearly.
  • Organize and incorporate technician notes, photographs, scans, drawings, and supporting test data into final reports.
  • Ensure inspection reports and technical deliverables comply with applicable client requirements, company procedures, industry codes, and standards.
  • Maintain inspection records and mechanical-integrity data within applicable databases and inspection-management systems.
  • Support mechanical-integrity database functions and inspection protocols, including Thickness Measurement Locations (TMLs), condition trending, API inspection checklists, and data entry into PCMS or similar systems.
  • Create, revise, and maintain 2D CAD drawings and related technical documentation.
  • Read and interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), piping layouts, isometric drawings, specifications, and other engineering documents.
  • Perform complex drafting, design, and technical-support assignments using advanced drafting methods and established standards and procedures.
  • Apply a thorough understanding of piping routing, layout, and isometric-drawing requirements.
  • Create or modify AutoCAD toolbars and ribbons when required to support project needs and improve workflow efficiency.
  • Use advanced PC, 2D CAD, and applicable 3D design tools, hardware, and software to complete assigned work.
  • Perform drawing and report quality checks to verify technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company and client standards.
  • Work closely with NDT technicians, inspectors, engineers, designers, project managers, clients, and other project personnel to resolve questions and communicate inspection findings.
  • Lead or train less-experienced drafting, reporting, or project personnel as assigned.
  • Provide technical guidance and share drafting, reporting, and database-management knowledge with other employees.
  • Lead a small project or a defined phase of a larger project when assigned.
  • Support project administration by developing and monitoring staffing and schedule requirements, establishing discipline-specific design requirements, maintaining drafting and design data, and preparing work-share packages.
  • Ensure discipline deliverables meet established requirements for technical quality, accuracy, schedule, and compliance.
  • Manage multiple priorities and complete assignments within established deadlines.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of client, employee, inspection, and project information.
  • Provide departmental guidance and support during the manager’s absence, as assigned.
  • Travel or accept field assignments when required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree, technical degree, or certificate in Drafting, CAD, Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • Three to five years of piping-design or drafting experience, including a thorough understanding of piping routing and layout.
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD and 2D drafting software.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, PFDs, piping layouts, isometric drawings, technical specifications, and inspection documentation.
  • Familiarity with common NDT methods and the ability to interpret technician notes, inspection readings, and supporting data.
  • Working knowledge of applicable inspection codes and standards, including API, ASME, and AWS requirements.
  • Strong technical-writing skills and the ability to prepare clear, accurate, and professional inspection reports.
  • Experience using inspection software, databases, or mechanical-integrity data-management systems.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, analytical ability, and document-control practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and determine an appropriate course of action within established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with field technicians, inspectors, project teams, management, customers, and regulatory representatives.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, or train less-experienced employees.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel or accept field assignments as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preparing or reviewing NDT inspection reports.
  • Experience with piping isometric drawings.
  • PCMS experience.
  • Experience with TRACE, BEAM, or MIDAS.
    • Familiarity with boiler-data collection and analytics.
    • Experience with TML management, inspection-data trending, and API inspection checklists.
    • Experience with 3D CAD or design software.
