Job Description

Your Opportunity

Are you passionate about helping communities shape their future through thoughtful comprehensive planning and meaningful public engagement? Stantec is seeking a remote Comprehensive Planning and Community Engagement Intern to support communities across northeast Kansas. In this role, you will contribute to community-driven plans that address land use, housing, transportation, economic development, infrastructure, natural resources, resilience, and quality of life while helping create inclusive opportunities for residents and stakeholders to participate in the planning process.

Stantec’s planning team partners with communities of all sizes to create practical, community-supported plans that reflect local priorities and regional context. For communities across Northeast Kanas, our work recognizes the area’s distinctive landscapes, small towns, rural character, economic opportunities, infrastructure needs, and deep community connections. The intern will collaborate remotely with planners, designers, technical specialists, clients, and community partners while gaining hands-on experience in comprehensive planning and public engagement. At Stantec, we design with community in mind, bringing together expertise in planning, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, and related disciplines to help communities build a stronger and more resilient future.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Support comprehensive and long-range planning projects for communities across the region, helping move assignments from research and early engagement through plan development and final deliverables.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze information related to land use, demographics, housing, transportation, economic development, infrastructure, natural resources, and community facilities.
  • Assist with community outreach activities, including stakeholder interviews, focus groups, surveys, public meetings, workshops, open houses, and online engagement designed to reach a broad range of community voices.
  • Prepare clear, accessible planning content, including meeting materials, summaries, maps, graphics, presentations, outreach materials, and draft plan sections.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Coursework or experience related to comprehensive planning, long-range planning, land use, rural or small-community planning, zoning, or community development.
  • Strong research, writing, communication, and technical skills; experience with ArcGIS, data visualization, graphic design, survey tools, or the Adobe Creative Suite is beneficial.
  • Interest in inclusive planning and an ability to communicate respectfully with residents, local leaders, community organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong time management, critical thinking, organization, and attention to detail, with the ability to manage assignments and meet deadlines in a remote setting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a distributed team, communicate proactively, and complete tasks independently with appropriate guidance.

Education and Experience

  • Applicants should be current students of an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in planning, community and regional planning, urban planning, geography, public administration, landscape architecture, or a related field. #Student

This is a remote position. The employee will work primarily from a home-office environment using computers and virtual collaboration tools. Periodic travel within the Northeast Kansas region will be required to support community meetings, workshops, stakeholder engagement, field visits, and other project needs. Travel may include evening meetings and occasional exposure to outdoor elements and inclement weather conditions.
