Job Description

You will work at the intersection of regulation, technology, and business strategy; advising on complex global initiatives, including emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, while shaping how data protection is embedded into everything we do. This is a role with real impact, where your expertise helps the organisation move forward safely and confidently.

The Team

You will join a global Data Protection Compliance team that sits at the heart of ING’s non-financial risk framework. The team partners closely with business, technology, and risk functions to ensure data protection is fully integrated into decision-making and operational processes.

Working in an international and highly collaborative environment, you will engage with local Data Protection Officers, compliance specialists, and stakeholders across multiple countries and business lines. Together, the team drives consistent, high-quality standards while adapting to evolving regulatory expectations and business needs.

As a senior, you are expected to work independently, speak up and bring your own vision on data protection to the table.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Identifies, assesses, advises on, monitors and reports on the ING’s data protection and retention compliance risks to help the organization avoid failure (or perceived failure) to comply with applicable laws, regulations and ethical standards. Develops and/or implements and/or applies relevant rules and controls to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulation and standards.

  • Provide senior specialist advice on the interpretation and application of policies and procedures, resolving complex or contentious queries and issues and enabling others to take appropriate actions.

  • Optimize data protection risk journeys on key data protection processes with a focus on standardization and global to local streamlining to support and monitor business management's control of data protection risk

  • Explore and develop a detailed understanding of external developments with regards to GDPR and other privacy laws, world wise as well as AI or emerging issues and evaluate their potential impact on, or usefulness to, the organization.

  • Provide training or coaching to others throughout the organization with regards to data protection to enable others to improve performance and fulfill personal potential.

  • Monitor and manage a wide range of DPC advisory activities ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements GDPR and other privacy or complementary laws by liaising with all internal risk management functions and business functions while supporting the development and implementation of the organization's compliance policy

As a senior specialist, you will contribute to shaping ING’s global data protection strategy and advisory approach. You will act as a key sparring partner to senior stakeholders and play a central role in translating regulatory expectations into business reality. You will:

  • Provide senior expert advice on complex data protection matters across global and local initiatives

  • Support the Policy & Advisory Lead and Global DPO in defining and evolving ING’s data protection framework and strategic direction

  • Translate regulatory developments (including GDPR and emerging privacy and AI-related requirements) into clear, practical guidance

  • Drive the optimisation and standardisation of key data protection processes across jurisdictions

  • Enable responsible innovation by advising on high-impact and high-risk initiatives, including new technologies

  • Strengthen data protection awareness and capability through targeted engagement, coaching, and training

  • Your work will have high visibility and impact, directly contributing to ING’s ability to operate as a trusted, compliant, and forward-looking financial institution.

  • A can-do mindset, oriented towards continuous pragmatic improvement and a drive to challenge the status quo are key.

  • Excellent (senior) stakeholder management skills and a deep knowledge data protection background are pre-requisites for this role.

  • A degree in Law is preferred.
